Badger was born in New Haven, Connecticut, May 26, 1829, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jeanie Badger Forbes, six and one-half miles northwest of Fairmont, Saturday morning, July 22, aged seventy-six years, one month and twenty-six days. When four years of age, he came with his parents to Ohio and there grew to manhood. On January 1, 1856, he was married to Mary A. Phelps at Ft. Wayne, Indiana. After residing in Ohio for several years, Mr. and Mrs. Badger moved to Storey county, Iowa, and after a short stay there, moved to Livingston county, Illinois, where the family remained until 1868 when they came to Nebraska and on October 20th of the same year settled on the homestead where their son, L.H. Badger, now resides. This has always been Mr. Badger's home since, although for a time he lived in Colorado, following his chosen vocation, that of civil engineer. His wife died January 11, 1894, since which time he has made his home with his two children, L.H. Badger and Mrs. Jeanie Badger Forbes. Mr. Badger was a man of splendid ability and irreproachable character. He was the first county clerk of Fillmore county, having been elected to the office of county clerk and county surveyor at the same time. He accepted the former and served practically in the capacity of both. Since that first election, he has served the county of Fillmore most of the time as county surveyor, being such at the time of his death. Mr. Badger was not an office seeker, but was sought out and retained in places of honor and trust, because of his capabilities and integrity of character. Mr. Badger was a man closely attached to his friends. Several years ago, he went to Omaha to visit a Mr. Smith, an old school friend and surveyor companion in Ohio, who was for many years surveyor of Douglas county Nebraska. Finding him in need of his services, he assisted in caring for his friend until he passed away. This incident is only one of many that might be mentioned showing the trend and character of the deceased. The immediate cause of Mr. Badger's death was a complication of kidney and heart troubles. Few of us living at this time realize the privations and trials of the old pioneers. When Mr. Badger with his family came to this county and burrowed, as it were, in the hillside near the Blue, there were only four houses in Fillmore county, three of them being occupied, Mr. Badger and family living in a dugout. Their trading point was Nebraska City. With no bridges, and often swollen streams to ford, who can realize the privations, except those who endured the trials. We owe a debt of gratitude to the pioneer. The funeral of this worthy pioneer was conducted from the home of his son by the Rev. Charles H. Beaver of the Congregational Church of Fairmont, Sunday p.m.; at 2:00 o'clock, and the remains quietly laid to rest in the Fairmont cemetery by the side of his companion. Music appropriate for the occasion was furnished by Mrs. J.U. Garey, Miss Carrie Dewey and Prof. and Mrs. L. Goodrich of Fairmont and R.W. and Mrs. Laing of Geneva. As special number, Mr. Laing sang "Face to Face" and Mrs. Garey and Miss Dewey a duet, "Morning Land." The floral offerings were varied and beautiful, attesting the respect and esteem of friends and official associates. Quite a number of the county officials were present at the funeral. The pallbearers were W.O. Bussard, N.J. Dixon, Lon Kauffman, James Conroy, R.G. Williams and M.V. King, pioneer friends and associates of the deceased. The first named being the first man to file a homestead claim in Fillmore County. The family of the deceased has the respect and heartfelt sympathy of the entire community and county.
