Badger, son of Henry L. and Mary Phelps Badger, was born in Piqua, Ohio, on October 5, 1856, and life closed for him on Thursday morning, January 25, 1940, on the homestead in Fillmore county, Nebraska, which had been his home since coming to the then unorganized territory with his parents in 1868. October 5th, the day the family crossed the Missouri river at Nebraska City, was his 12th birthday; they were traveling from Livingston county, Illinois, in an emigrant wagon with a buggy tied behind The family remained at Saltillo, while the father went west in the buggy to choose his claim on the Blue river in northwest Fillmore county. The family came onto what was to be their home on October 20, 1868, and camped until a dugout northeast of the present home could be occupied; a log cabin was the second shelter for this pioneer family. The years to this home had their trials and pleasures. Saturday afternoon, January 25th, neighbors and friends gathered in the same setting as of December 4, 1937, when mother, Mrs. Minnie Wies Badger was laid to rest to place father at her side. Lewis H. Badger and Miss Minnie Wies were married at York on February 27, 1886. They leave a daughter, Mrs. Mary Halsey, and grandson, Badger Halsey. Mr. Badger experienced frontier homesteading--the Indians, the game for food, crop success and the failures, and grew strong and steadfast in his purpose. He was a man of high standards, exact always and firm in the belief that every man was entitled to his due. He was a member of the Masonic orders, Lodge No.48, A.F.&A.M., and Eastern Star Chapter No. 38 at Fairmont and of the Scottish Rite consistory (32nd) in the Lincoln Valley. Funeral services were held at the home Saturday afternoon, January 27, at 1:30 o'clock, with Rev. Robert L. Embree of Fairmont officiating. Singing was by a mixed quartet comprising Mrs. Mable Cudaback, Miss Hester Whitmore R.F. Lord and Kenneth Jackson, with Mrs. William Shipley at the organ. The sons were "Lead Kindly Light," "Sweet Bye and Bye," and "Nearer My God to Thee". The minister's text and Bible readings were Isaiah 40:2-7; First Peter, 24th and 25th verse. Following the sermon, Ira C. Freet P.G.M., of York , read the Masonic burial ritual. Masonic services were dispensed with at the grave because of unfavorable weather and road conditions. Interment was made in the family plot in the Fairmont Cemetery. Pallbearers were H.R. Fassnacht, Harry Smith, E.A. Hall, C.M. Brown, L.L. Williams and A.B. Wiedman.
