One of the saddest shocks ever experienced by the citizens of this place occurred Wednesday evening when it was learned that one of our most prominent citizens, Henry M. Lamb, had passed into the great beyond, about five o'clock at his home on McLeod street. While many knew of his illness, few realized the danger and news of his death came as a thunder bolt from a clear sky. A few weeks ago Mr. Lamb received a kick from a horse which cut a gash in his right knee. The wound caused him no great inconvenience and apparently was almost entirely healed, until last Wednesday afternoon when the wound commenced paining him. The pain became so intense that he found it necessary to summon a physician. Dr. Alexander was called, who, upon removing the scab that had formed, found the wound filled with puss and affected with septicemia. The doctor succeeded in relieving the pain somewhat but the septicemia had reached such a stage that he was unable to check its spread and gradually the entire leg became affected. Monday he became delirious and fell into a state of semi-consciousness, in which state he remained until claimed by death. The funeral services, which were set for Friday afternoon, were postponed on account of a telegram received this afternoon from Stuart, Iowa, announcing that a brother of the deceased and Mrs. Lamb's father and mother who desired to attend the funeral would not arrive in time. The services will be held immediately after their arrival. The grief stricken widow, who has been suffering from poor health for some time, is prostrated by the shock and the attending physician regards her condition as exceedingly critical. The entire community deplores the unfortunate loss of an honored and respected citizen and the heartfelt sympathy of everyone goes out to the bereaved family. In our next issue we will publish a detailed account of the life of the deceased. Big Timber Pioneer, Monday, April 29, 1907, Funeral of H. M. Lamb Largely Attended The funeral of Henry M. Lamb, whose sudden demise we reported in our last issue, took place from the home on McLeod street Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, and the last sad rites were attended by sympathizing friends from far and near. The remains were buried in Mountain View cemetery. The local M. W. of A. lodge, of which order deceased was a member, formed a part of the funeral cortege to the cemetery, and the beautiful and impressive service of the order was used at the grave. The officiating clergyman, Rev. Joseph Pope of Laurel, delivered a splendid address, eulogizing the character of the deceased and dwelling at some length on his happy home life and the esteem in which he was held by his fellow citizens. The floral contributions were beautiful and the large number of contributions indicated the sorrow felt by the community. Vocal music was furnished by Mrs. R. A,. Maerdian, Miss Josephine Allen, Messrs. C. R. Gates and B. J. Klienhesselink. Mrs. F. Severance pianist. The Pall bearers were: Erick Steensland and John Watt representing the Woodmen lodge, M. Whalen and C. N. Skillman, representatives of the Eagle lodge, and Robt. Brownlee and A. Whitney, chosen by the family. Besides the immediate family there were present at the funeral Mrs. Lamb's mother and father, Benjamin Williams of Stuart, Iowa, and two brothers of the deceased, Charles P. of Stuart, Iowa and Benjamin F. of this place. Henry M. Lamb was one of the most widely known and highly esteemed men in this section of Montana. He was born in Guthrie County, Iowa, in 1866 and lived with his parents on the farm until 1888, when he was wedded to Miss Mary Williams on Sept 6, the marriage ceremony taking place at Guthrie Center. The following February he moved with his wife to Montana, locating on a ranch on the American Fork and engaged in the cattle business. In 1891 he purchased the Big Timber Martinsdale stage line and moved his family to this place to reside. He continued the stage line for three years after which he became interested in several mining claims in this vicinity. A year ago last fall he engaged in the sheep business, which business he conducted profitably until stricken with his fatal illness. Mr. Lamb always took a most active part in all public movements. He was one of the promoters and a stockholder of the first racing association in Sweet Grass county. The year following the termination of this first association the Sweet Grass county Fair and Racing association was organized largely through his efforts and he was chosen one of the first directors. This office he held continuously up to the time of his death. He was an ardent advocate of republican principles and always took and active interest in the success of his party. He was a member in good standing of the Modern Woodmen of America and Eagle lodges of this place and was insured in the first named lodge for $3,000 and in the Northwestern Mutual Life of Milwaukee for $3,000. He leaves a widow and four children; Nellie 16 years of age, Charles 12 years of age, Alva 10 years of age, and Gertrude 7 years, to mourn. One little daughter preceeded him to the grave about 8 years ago. He is survived by his father and mother, three sisters; Mrs. Sarah Ortman of Mankato, Kansas, Mrs. Rebecca A. Gulick of Valley Junction, Iowa, and Mrs. Louisa J. Wilson of Stuart, Iowa, and four brothers; Benjamin F. of this place, James, I., George C., and Charles P. all of Stuart, Iowa.
