Description	:	West Virginia Governor. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1855, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1858 and opened a law office in Lewisburg, Virginia. In addition to his law practice, he accepted a professorship of language and literature at Allegheny College in Blue Sulphur Springs. During the Civil War, he served as a Major of Artillery in the Confederate Army, After the war, he was elected to the West Virginia Senate, but was denied his seat because of his service with the Confederacy and his inability to take the required oath test. In addition to his law practice, he accepted a professorship of language and literature at Allegheny College in Blue Sulphur Springs. During the Civil War, he served as a Major of Artillery in the Confederate Army, After the war, he was elected to the West Virginia Senate, but was denied his seat because of his service with the Confederacy and his inability to take the required oath test. However, he was elected a member of the State Constitutional Convention of 1872 and served as the 7th Attorney General of West Virginia (1873-77). In 1887, he was elected as a Democrat the 5th West Virginia Governor, serving until 1881. During his term, he dealt with railroad strikes and riots through the state. After leaving office, he was president of the White Sulphur Springs Company and practiced law until his death.
