On Friday afternoon, August 28, Henry Mullong, a pioneer settler of Plymouth county, died at the home of his daughter , Mrs. Mike Allway at Eagle Grove, Iowa. Death was caused by old age and pneumonia, which set in 10 days before his death. Funeral services were held from the Catholic church at Eagle Grove Monday morning at 1 a.m. Following the services the body was brought to Le Mars for interment, and burial services were held at St. Joseph’s cemetery at 1 p.m. His wife, who preceded him in death 22 years, is buried in Le Mars. Henry Mullong was born in 1851 at Luxemburg. He came to the United States at the age of 19, and for some time worked as a tailor. Forty-eight years ago, he took up a homestead, seven miles southeast of Remsen, and lived there for many years. He suffered all the hardships of the early pioneer, when his entire crop of stacked grain was destroyed by the prairie fire. Twice the grasshoppers swept over and devastated his land. Twenty-two years ago, he left the farm, and went to Winona, Minn., where he lived for 17 years. From there he went to Sioux City, and two years ago to Eagle Grove, where he has been living with his daughter. He leaves six children to mourn his loss: Mrs. Mike Allway, Eagle Grove; Mrs. George Dorothy, Mrs. Lou Weber, Peter Mullong all of Sioux City and Dr. C. R. Mullong of Norfolk, Neb. All the children were present at the funeral except John and Mrs. Lou Weber, who were unable to come due to sickness. Geo. E. Scott and H. Mullong, 79, Called to Final Rewards Since Our Last Issue. Henry Mullong, 79, died Friday evening, Aug. 28 at 6:20, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mike Allaway. Mr. Mullong was ill two weeks with intestinal flu which developed into pneumonia. Every possible care was given him, but his age and weakened condition made it impossible for him to throw off the attack. He was born Oct. 15, 1851, in Luxemburg, Germany. He came to this country at the age of 17. He was a tailor by trade and settled at Independence, Ia., where he worked at his trade and at Jessup, Ia. for a number of years. He then took up a homestead six and one half miles from what is now known as Remsen, Iowa. The township he lived in was named for him, “Henry Township”. His daughter, Mrs. Dorothy was the first white child born in that county. He later moved to Winona, Minn., where he ran a fruit farm on the edge of the city, which place he sold three years ago. He came to Eagle Grove two years ago to make his home with Mr. and Mrs. Allaway. He owned a lot in the Broadway addition, and spent a lot of time there, caring for his fruits and garden. He had one of the best gardens in the city. Mrs. Mullong died 22 years ago. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Mullong and all survive. They are: Mrs. Lillie Dorothy, Mrs. Cecilia Weber, John and Pete Mullong, all of Sioux City, Dr. Chas. Mullong of Norfolk, Neb., and Mrs. Lucile Allaway of this city. Funeral services were held at seven o’clock Monday morning at Sacred Heart church; charge of Father Clessin. Burial was made in the family lot at Le Mars. Those who attended the funeral from out of town were: Dr. and Mrs. Chas. Mullong of Norfolk, Mr. and Mrs. Dorothy, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Mullong and Mrs. Earl Mandershied and daughter, Colleen, all of Sioux City. The sincere sympathy of all is extended Mrs. Allaway and the surviving relatives in the hour of their great sorrow. – The Eagle Grove Eagle, Thursday, September 3, 1931, page 1
