A fine representative, not only of the prosperous and well-to-do agriculturists of Calhoun county, but of the self-made men of the state, Henry Goldup, of Homer township, is especially worthy of more than passing mention in a work of this kind and value. Like many other of Michigan's more prosperous citizens, he is of foreign birth and breeding, having been born, January 15, 1844, in England. His parents, Thomas and Caroline (Harington) Goldup, were life-long residents of England, the father having been overseer on a large farming estate, and both having been members of the Church of England. At the age of twenty-one years, deciding that a change of scenes and country might prove beneficial to his finances, at least, Henry Goldup, unaccompanied by either friends or relatives, crossed the Atlantic to New York, and for two years worked by the month at Hoosick Falls, that state. Being economical and frugal, he saved one hundred dollars the first year. In 1868 he came to Michigan where land was cheaper than in the eastern states, locating in Calhoun county, where he worked by the month for three years, after which he rented land for two years, and farmed on his own account. In 1875 Mr. Goldup first became a landholder, paying part cash down for eighty acres of land, which was in its primitive wildness. Clearing a space, he erected a house and the necessary farm buildings, fenced the land, and continued his agricultural operations. As his means increased, he invested in other tracts of land, and is now the owner of four hundred acres of as rich farming land as can be found in his neighborhood. A broad-minded, liberal man, enterprising and progressive, he has spared neither time nor expense in adding to the improvements of his property, and in addition to carrying on general farming breeds Durham cattle, a branch of industry that he finds quite profitable. Mr. Goldup married, in 1868, Jane Hannah Peal, and to them twelve children have been born, namely: Thomas, who bought the Cook farm, which he is now managing successfully: James, working on his father's farm; Clara, wife of Will Riechow, of Homer: Charley, twin brother of Clara, lives in Albion; Susan, wife of John Mathias, of Homer; Florence, lives with her parents; Willie, living at home; and Bessie, attending the Homer high school, and four that died in youth. Politically Mr. Goldup is a Democrat, and religiously he and his wife are members of the Presbyterian church. Henry Goldup. a prominent and respected farmer of Homer Township, Calhoun County, Michigan, and one of the largest land owners in this part of the country, was born in East Kent, England, January 13.1846, the years of his boyhood being spent in the land of his birth. When he was twenty-one years of age. having saved one hundred dollars from his wages the year previous for the purpose of emigation, he took passage on the City of Dublin, a vessel which used both steam and sail, but with only onw smokestack, and after a voyage of twenty-one days, landed in New York City. He went at once toward the farming lands of the state, going up the Hudson River to Albany, Locating then at Hoosie Corners, a little town about twenty-two miles from Albany, there engaging as a farm hand for two and half years. With confidence as to the promises held out by the middle west, Mr Goldup came to Michigan, locating in Homer Township, Calhoun county, where he has since made his home, winning the respect and confidence of all with whom he came in contact by his life of patient, preserving energy and untiring industry. He sought and found employment with Philo Gibbs, with whom he remained for three years engaged in farming, after which he entered the employment of C.C. Worthington. After two years spent with Mr Worthington he was employed by John Powers, working his farm on shares for two years and then renting Truman Power's farm for one year. With the proceeds of his industry and energy he purchased eighty acres of land on section 20 and erected a house and barn and made other improvements which added not a little to the value of his property. For seven years thereafter he also rented land of Mr Boughton, at the close of which time he purchased eighty acres of the later, and later made a purchase of forty acres located on section 19. In 1886 he removed to the Gibbs place on Section 8 where he now makes his home, a few years ago having purchased a hundred and twenty acres across the road, on Section 7, which he conducted in conjunction with the hundred and twenty acres which he had purchased before and hundred and twenty acres which comprised the farm upon which he is living. A year ago he purchased the farm upon which he had made his home for so many years, in the meantime also renting the old Gibb's homestead which he conducted for seven years. His energy and industry were limitless, though in 1903 he gave up the management of the later property on account of an accident which befell his wife. Mr Goldup owns and operates four hundred and forty acres of land, comprised in four farms, each of which is well equipped with needful buildings, fine farm houses, barns, outbuildings. etc, all the result of his own unaided effort and thought. Not a little, however, of the success which has come to Mr Goldup has been added to by the same characteristics in his wife which have distinguished his own life. She was in maidenhood Jane Anne Horner, a daughter of Henry Horner, a native of Ireland. She came to America in 1867, landing in New York city without friends and with only twelve shillings of English money in her possession. Not discouraged, however, by the prospect, she at once sought and found employment, and as a memento of the time when she stood face to face with the necessity for effort she still had her possession ten of the original shillings with which she landed in America. Her union with Mr Goldup occurred in 1868, and together they have made their struggle for a competence. Mr Goldup's land is devoted to general farming and stock-raising. To Mr and Mrs Goldup were born Sixteen children: Six died in infancy, and not named: Eliz died at the age of seventeen: Thomas, married Nancy Linton and lives near his father's farm : James lives at home: Caroline died at the age of six weeks: Clara married William Reichow, and is the mother of one child, Mark Reichow: Charles and Susan live at home: Florence is a teacher in the public schools in Homer, Mi: William lives at home and is still a student and Bessie, also a student, all have attended the school of Homer, Mi. Mr Goldup is a Democrat politically and though ever ready to lead his best efforts toward progression and reform, has never cared for official recognition. He is a member of the Presbyterian church at Homer, Michigan.
