He developed the first hydraulic and motor driven drilling machine in the area and soon abandoned farming in order to establish the successful drilling business in Exeter. Because of his ability to sense the location of water supplies and to install good producing wells, his services were in demand over a wide area. Both Henry and his wife, May Schmitt of Geneva died in 1932, leaving three daughters, Rita Jean (Gunn), Phyllis Joan (DePriest) and Frances Roine (Drew). His well drilling business was continued by his brother in law, William H. Voightlander whose son, Howard Q. Voightlander followed in the business. Henry R. died at the age of 43. Fillmore County News, Exeter, Thursday February 4, 1932: Henry Russell Burress, only son of James R.[sic] and Alvaretta Burress, was born at Burress, Nebr. July 1, 1889. November 18, 1913 he was married to Miss Mae Schmitt of Geneva. To this union three daughters were born: Rita Jean, Joan and Frances. Mr. Burress was ill only a few days and seemingly was regaining his health when he was very suddenly called to the Great Beyond Saturday evening, Jan. 30, 1932, at the age of 42 years, 6 months and 29 days. Mr. and Mrs. Burress made their home at Burress until seven years ago when they moved to Exeter where they have since lived. Mr. Burress was a member of several lodges and a very active member of the volunteer fire department of Exeter. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife and three little daughters; three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Hand of Fremont, Mrs. Florence Voightlander of Geneva and Mrs. Lela Acker of Exeter; three aunts, several nephews and nieces and a host of friends. He was a kind and loving husband and father, and was always found ready and willing to lend a helping hand whenever needed. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with Rev. E. Boll of St. Stephen's church in charge. Interment was in the Exeter cemetery.
