He was born at Columbiana, Oct. 3, 1868, and is the son of Frederick and Elizabeth (Kuegle) Staley. Frederick Staley was born in Germany, the son of Jacob Staley, a pioneer settler of Unity Township, Columbiana County. Frederick Staley was 17 years of age when his family emigrated to the United States. They spent several years in Pittsburgh before settling in this county. Mr. Staley was a cabinet maker by trade. He had two sisters: Caroline, deceased; and Catherine, the widow of Andrew Harter, lives at Columbiana. To Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Staley, deceased, the following children were born: Henry, the subject of this sketch; Elizabeth and Lorena, who live at Columbiana; Frederick, lives at Akron, Ohio; Ella, married Park D. Holloway, lives at Akron, Ohio; and Matilda, married J. E. Glenn, lives at North Lima, Ohio. Henry Staley has always lived in Columbiana. After completing his schooling he clerked in the shoe store of A. M. Frederick & Son for almost 11 years, when the business was sold to Jeffreys Brothers. This partnership continued until 1913 when Mr. Staley purchased an interest of one of the Jeffreys brothers. In January, 1919, Mr. Staley formed a partnership with Irvin S. Smith. The business is known as Jeffreys-Staley Company. It is the oldest established business of its kind in the county and has a large patronage. In 1905 Mr. Staley was married to Miss Cora Roninger, of Columbiana, the daughter of George and Leah Roninger. Mr. Roninger, a Civil War veteran who is now 94 years of age, resides at Columbiana. His wife is deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Staley have no children. Mr Staley is a Democrat and has been a member of the school board for 18 years, and has also served as a member of the Columbiana County board of education for six years. He holds membership in the Lutheran Church, of which he has been treasurer for 26 years, as well as Sunday School superintendent.
