| Description | : | Henry was born in Walkenhagen, Germany, the son of shepherd Otto Christian Groth and Anne Maria Moller. He married Wilhelmina Drefahl on June 29, 1860, and the couple emigrated to America in 1869. He may have come to the U.S. to escape military conscription, as the Franco-Prussian war was imminent. Upon arrival in New York (aboard the Hammonia) a man offered $100 for Wilhelmina's beautiful long hair (to be used for wigmaking), but Henry refused, so evidently the family had some financial resources upon arrival in America, or at least wasn't desperate for money.
