Beall Dies in Nebraska ~ Was An Heir to An Estate and Was for Years Thought Dead. There are not many persons of Allegany and Garrett counties who remember Henry Tomlinson Beall, who was many years ago a well known citizen of what is now Garrett county. He died three months ago at Fairfield, Nebraska. He was the youngest son of Judge Isaac Beall, who was the youngest son of Capt. Thomas Beall, of Samuel, the founder or father of our city. The mother of the deceased was Rebecca Tomlinson Beall, one of the three daughters of Jesse Tomlinson. Henry T. Beall was the last surviving grandson of the old proprietor of Fort Cumberland, so called in early times. Mr. Beall was born at or near Cumberland in the year 1825, and was nearly an octogenarian at his death. His parents, about the year 1832, moved to the Little Meadows, now Garrett county, near the residence of the father-in-law, where they lived all the remainder of their lives, and where Henry grew up to manhood. He became the owner of a fine estate called "Chimberazo," upon which he resided for a number of years. Shortly after the Civil War he sold his lands and moved down to the Shenandoah Valley, where he remained for several years. His next move was to Nebraska, in its earliest years, where he finished his very quiet life. He was noted for his style of existence--almost secluded in his ways of living. His residence was but little known in the latter half of his life. In fact, for a number of years he was supposed to be dead and in law was so treated. A strange incident, this, in his life, the result of his seclusiveness. He had a brother, Samuel B. Beall, who for many years lived in St. Louis. He was much of the same nature and habits as the other brother. Even his brothers and sisters did not know of his existence or whereabouts. About a dozen years ago Samuel died without children or wife, leaving an estate of about $10,000, but no will. His heirs were hunted up and most of them found, but Henry T. Beall was treated as dead. A woman claiming to be his widow, with two children, appeared in court and obtained the share of the living Henry T. Beall and of the right of the claimants to his share in the estate of Samuel B. Beall. There was certainly some crooked proceedings, as Henry T. Beall was then living and without a wife. However, he married Caroline Gibler and had four sons: James Wilson , Charles Henry, Thomas Paul and Lemuel Franklin. An 1879 newspaper article describes how Henry abandoned Caroline and took two of the sons with him. The 1880 census shows Henry living with Charles and Thomas in Thayer, Nebraska. Henry called himself a widower and Caroline said she was a widow in later censuses. Caroline signed an affidavit in the case of the inheritance mentioned in the obituary saying Henry and the two boys were dead. Whether this was because she hadn't heard from them and they were legally dead or whether Henry agreed she should have the inheritance, we don't know, Caroline is buried in Hyndman, PA.
