Barber, third son of Romanta and Lydia Barber, was born in Fowler, Trumbull Co., Ohio, Jan. 30, 1843 and departed this life at Ransom, Kansas, Jan. 2, 1926 at the age of 82 years, 11 months and 3 days. On February 15, 1866 he was united in marriage with Fanny M. Woods at Fowler, Ohio. To this union seven children were born, the youngest son dying in infancy. The rest are all living and are; Fred A. On February 15, 1866 he was united in marriage with Fanny M. Woods at Fowler, Ohio. To this union seven children were born, the youngest son dying in infancy. The rest are all living and are; Fred A. Barber of Penrose, Colorado; Adelbert H. Barber, of Ransom, Kansas; Claude J. Barber of Bellingham, Washington, Mrs. Mabel I. Lynn, Mrs. Millie A. Jackson, and Mrs. Dora B. Barkley, all of Ransom, Kansas. These, with his faithful companion of almost sixty years, 33 grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Lua Munsell, of Denver, Colorado are left to mourn his departure, besides a host of other relatives and friends. He was a veteran of the Civil War, was a member of Co. A. 41st O.V.I. serving for three years. In 1876 he moved with his family to Precept, Furnas Co., Nebraska, making that his home until 1883. He returned with his family to Ohio, but again came west in 1889, settling on a farm near Ransom, Kansas making that his home until March 1902 when he moved into Ransom to take up his duties as Postmaster serving in that capacity for nine years. With the exception of one year spent in Florida and four years at Sulphur Springs, Arkansas, he has made Ransom his home. He was converted and baptized into Christ in early manhood in Ohio, placing his membership with the church of Christ at this place and was always found at the place of worship until failing health prevented. He has been an invalid and constant sufferer for three and a half years. He bore his sufferings with amazing patience and fortitude. He had no fear of death and often wished to go and be with his loved ones gone before. His departure leaves a vacancy in the home that can never be filled. Relatives from a distance were; Mr. and Mrs. A.D. Ellis of Beaver City, Nebraska. Mrs. Ellis is a niece of Mr. Barber. Funeral On account of the cold weather, the services were held at the M.E. Church instead of the church of Christ, that it might better accommodate the large numbers who met to pay their last tribute to this highly respected citizen. The choir was composed of 8 gentlemen and 6 ladies representing the different churches. Rev. J.M. Briggs conducted the service and delivered the sermon assisted by Brother Irvine and Rev. J.L. Mitchell. Mr. H.J. Nesmith was the funeral director. The floral offerings were numerous and very beautiful. The body was laid to rest in the Ransom cemetery. Ransom Record, Jan. 7, 1926
