The speaker summed his life up in one true sentence, "He wringed no man." The funeral was attended by many of the old friends and neighbors of the family, most of whom have so often before been called upon to assist at the last sad rites of members of this sorely afflicted family. The many floral tributes bespoke the high esteem in which he was held by all who knew him. The remains were laid to rest in west Linwood cemetery. Henry W. Hess was a son of John and Leah Hess, one of the oldest and most highly respected families of the county. He was born in Columbia County, Ohio, Nov. 10, 1855, and died at San Bernardina, Cal., Dec. 7, 1904, being 49 years and 17 days old at the time of his death. When he was six months old his parents moved to Lee County, Ill., and settled on a farm near Dixon. While they resided there, two sons, Nicolson and Santee, enlisted in the army and both died of measles contracted in camp, and one son, Barrett, died at home, aged 17 years. In the spring of 1867 the family removed to Boone county, Iowa, and settled on a farm in Colfax township near the present town of Jordan, which has ever since been the family home. The writer lived neighbors to this family in Colfax Township for many years, and can testify to the true worth, strict integrity and kindly disposition of its every member. Kinder neighbors and better friends it has never been our lot to enjoy. Since coming to Boone County, both the aged parents, two sisters, Elmira and Rhonda A., and two brothers, Cyrus and Crawford, and now Henry have passed away. Out of the large family of father, mother, eight boys and two girls, only two boys, George and Emanuel are left. Surely this family has been given more than its share of sorrow, yet they have borne it all bravely and patiently, and with a true Christian spirit. They have the sincerest sympathy of all their friends and neighbors in their many bereavements. The subject of this obituary left the old farm about sixteen years ago and went to Nebraska, with his brother, Cyrus, where they farmed for five years, or until the death of Cyrus, when he returned to Boone, and since that time has followed the trade of a carpenter. About two years ago his health began to decline, and he soon found that it was necessary to seek a better climate. In October, 1903, he went to Colorado and spent last winter in Pueblo, where for a time he was very low, but rallied again, and since that time, reports of the condition of his health have been very encouraging, and his friends had reason to feel that he was on the road to recovery. In September of this year, he with his brother, George, went to San Bernardina, Cal., where he apparently continued to improve until about two weeks before his death, but it was only his indomitable courage and brave spirit that was sustaining him. He made a brave and heroic fight against the dread disease that has fasten itself upon his life. He became reconciled at the end, however, and passed peacefully away, with a sublime faith and hope in the promise of a better world where he was going.
