Description	:	Henry Martin of Walnut Kansas died May 9th 1884 at 5 O'clock; he was 38 years 2 months 19 days old. He was born in Prussia February 20, 1846 and came to this country with his parents in 1849, and in the beginning of 1856 landing in Warsaw and resided in Hancock County until they departed this life. Read More	Henry Martin of Walnut Kansas died May 9th 1884 at 5 O'clock; he was 38 years 2 months 19 days old. He was born in Prussia February 20, 1846 and came to this country with his parents in 1849, and in the beginning of 1856 landing in Warsaw and resided in Hancock County until they departed this life. Sometime in the month of August 1862, the deceased enlisted in Basco, in Company H 118th Regiment Illinois Volunteers, when but in his 16th year. He was a brave soldier; conscientious in the discharge of his duty he was beloved and esteemed by his comrades. He was in ten hotly contested battles and about as many skirmishes. On the 23rd of March 1864, he and two of his comrades were taken prisoners between port Hudson and Baton Rogue while in discharge of their regular duties. In the spring of 1865, he was exchanged, lacking only a few days of having in Andersonville prison a year. When exchanged like many hundreds of gallant boys who had suffered in prison, he was physically weak, reduced to a skeleton and covered with sores. To describe the horrible treatment he received in that loathsome prison, from the hands of demons in the shape of human beings, and in a civilized and Christian country, is beyond the power of my tardy pen. Deceased received a fair education at the Central Wesleyan College in Warrenton, Missouri. After leaving College he accepted a clerkship in a store, in which business he continued until his health failed. On October 5th, 1870 at Warrenton, Missouri, he married Miss Lucretia Parker, an intelligent and kindhearted lady. Six children were born to them, of which two are living and four died in infancy. In the capacity of a clerk and bookkeeper he acquired considerable ability, frequently having entire charge of large stores, and of the buying of goods often to the amount of $5000 at a time. He was honest, honorable, upright, free, and open in all his business transactions. His life was a life of industry, and his path often strewn with thorns, but with his faith in the atoning blood of Jesus buoyed up his heart in all the vicissitudes of life. From the effects of Andersonville life he never recovered. And about three years ago he begin to fail so fast the he was no longer able to perform any labor. During this time he suffered very much, and his faithful wife, with true womanly feelings and Christian fortitude, devoted herself to his care, cheering him up and watching by his bed day and night. He was warmly attached to his family and to his parents and brothers. A few moments before his lamp of light went out he said "All is well; all is bright and that he would wait for us all in the upper and better world." But when 11 years old he joined the German M. E. Church at Warsaw, Illinois and was an earnest and zealous Christian. After marriage he joined the English M. E. Church. He was buried by the masons. The funerals procession took place on Monday afternoon from the M. E. Church in Walnut, Kansas and consisted of a large concourse of people. Arriving at the cemetery his remains were laid away in the bosom of the earth by the hands of kind friends. He has answered the last roll call his soul is at home in the paradise of God along with our dear parents, and his four darling children. Though we will never again see the precious form of our dear brother, nor meet his pleasant smiles or hear his clear voice, yet the hope of meeting him in that "sweet, bye and bye" cheers our poor hearts. A dear companion, two children and six brothers mourn his death. To this tribute of respect to the memory of our dear brother who was always kind so me, who was always patient, who always held out his hand to me in all the ups and downs of life, and who I tenderly and dearly loved.
