Description	:	Lewis Martin,was the editor and proprietor of the Walnut Eagle and its job printing plant, was acknowledged high rank among the newspaper men of Crawford county, and the journal of which he was the editor for 18 years, Mr Martin had a somewhat comspicuous place in the county history because of his resolute and successful opposition to the liquor traffic. He was aggressive, and devoted to principles. He was held in high esteem. He was born in Prussia, 3 Jan 1849, son of Peter and Charlotte Martin, also natives of Prussian Germany. His parents came to America in 1849. locating first in Greensburg, Pennsylvannia. In 1856 moved to Hancock county, Illinois, both died in that state. He had a public school education and attended Central Wesleyan college at Warrentown, Missouri. He taught school for several years, and in 1887 he arrived in walnut and purchased half interest in the Walnut Eagle. He maintained this paper at a high standard. Had always given his readers the news and something worth reading, with a large circulation throughout the county. About 1907, Mr. Martin through colums of his paper, began a crusade against the open saloons of the town, operating against the law. This was an uphill and bitter fight, and the mayor of Walnut offered fifty dollars to have the paper run out of town, and a mob also made an attempt to drive him out. But, the final victory lodged with Mr. Martin and the Eagle. For a time Walnut was without saloons. Mr. Martin was one of the organizers of the first law and order league in Kansas. He was a member and the secretary of the Lodge No.69 of the Woodmen of the World. He and his family were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and was one of the trustees. He was married at West Point, Illinois, to Miss Eliza Wilson, daughter of J.B. Wilson. They had a son John Arthur,who worked at the Walnut Eagle with his father.
