The Moravia Union - Thursday September 13, 1928 - Page 1TAPS SOUNDED FOR CIVIL WAS VETERAN In the death of Henry W. Stocker, which occurred at the home of his son, Harry, in Moravia, Thursday, Sept. 6th, this vicinity has witnessed the passing of another of the very, very few remaining Civil War veterans who have made this and adjoining communities their home. It is now necessary to go several miles out from Moravia before another living veteran of this war is to be found. Not so very many years ago it was a common sight to see large numbers of these veterans assembled together on Decoration Day in honor of their fallen comrades and on other special days for patriotic demonstrations, but their ranks have been thinning rapidly with declining years until now the last one has gone on to be reunited with his comrades. No more will these staunch figures be found in the procession which wends it way to the cemetery once each year to pay tribute to the nation's dead and the task must necessarily be carried on by their younger comrades, the veterans of later wars, and associated organizations. May the lessons in patriotism which they have taught never be forgotten and may they be passed on down to succeeding generations.Obituary Henry W. Stocker was born in Tusciousrovis county, Ohio, January 1st, 1843 and departed this life at the home of his son Harry, in Moravia, Iowa, September 6th, 1928, at the age of 85 years, eight months and five days. He came to Iowa with his parents when a small boy and spent his life in Davis and Monroe counties. In the year 1861, he, with three brothers, enlisted in the service of the United States, in Co. B, 30th Iowa Infantry, the regiment that marched with Sherman "from Atlanta to the sea," After three and one half years' service he was honorably discharged. On August 4, 1866, he was united in marriage to Temperence E. Osborn. To this union three children were born; Clarence Tillman of Albia; Earnest who died in infancy and Ada Eldora Wilson of Moravia. The wife an mother of this family died in 1873. In 1875 he was again united in marriage to Barbara E. Dale. To this union eleven children were born: Della M. Knapp of Blakesburg; Melvin W. of Ottumwa; Carrie O. Dudley of Moravia; Harry E. of Moravia; Iva E. Lock of Woodward; John M. of Des Moints; Jennie L. Johnson of Moravia; Doris A. Johnson of Herrington, Kansas; Gomer H. of Moravia; and Gladys and Glee who died in infancy. The wife and mother of this family died October 15, 1914. While a young man he was converted at the old Moravian church in Moravia and joined the Baptist church. He, being the last of his family, leaves to mourn their loss eleven children, fifty-six grandchildren, twenty-nine great grandchildren, 3 half brothers, 3 half sisters, and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held from the Methodist Church in Moravia, Saturday afternoon, Sept. 8th, at one o'clock. It was the first funeral to be held in the new church which has been in use just six months. Rev. O.J. Fix preached the sermon and was assisted in the services by Rev. Osborn, a brother-in-law, and Rev. Donahoo, a friend of the deceased. Following the services at the church the remains were taken to the Sayles cemetery for burial. Members of the Basil Cowell Post of the American Legion asted as pallbearers and formed the miltary escort which accompanied the body to the cemetery. Read less
