Though he had been in feeble health for some time, he was up and about the house as usual Monday, but complained of feeling ill toward evening. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Freebern, rector of the Episcopal church at Central City, at the home yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Burial was made in the Shell Creek cemetery northeast of Columbus. Mr. Welch was born in Dorsetshire, England, October 7, 1842. He came to America with his parents in the spring of 1847, landing at New Orleans. They spent two years in St. Louis and then resided in Alton, Ill., eight years. In 1857 they moved to Florence, Nebr., and later in the same year they came to Genoa to make their home. Ten years later Mr. Welch came to Columbus, and after spending two years here he moved onto a homestead in the Shell Creek valley just across the line in Colfax county. There he made his home until about two years ago when he retired from farm life and came again to Columbus. On December 24, 1870, he married Miss Marguerite Pilling, who was a member of one of the pioneer families of Platte county. She passed away in September, 1904. Mr. Welch leaves two sons and four daughters. They are Charles H. Welch, Robert C. Welch, and Mrs. Louis Voss of Colfax county and Miss Mary E. Welch at home, and Mrs. Albert Kurth, of Duncan.
