March 1987 ******** Alton Democrat; February 9, 1940 Henry Wolbers, a resident of the Alton vicinity for thirty-five years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Kathryn Hughes at Sheldon, on Tuesday morning, February 6 at eight o'clock, after an illness of several months. He was 74 years, 1 month and 14 days of age at the time of his passing. The remains were taken to the home of his son Carl at 410 West 8th St., Sheldon. Hundreds of friends in this vicinity regret the death of their old friend, who's kindness and cheerful smile be long remembered by many. Funeral services this Thursday morning will be held at St. Mary's church, Alton, of which he was a faithful member. Interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery. Henry Wolbers was born at Cottonville, Jackson county, Iowa, on December 23, 1865. He was married at Bellevue on November 26, 1890, to Miss Mary Thill. The couple came west after their marriage and lived at Le Mars and Remsen until they moved to the farm five miles south of Alton, which had been Mr. Wolbers' home until November 1939, when he went to the home of his daughter in Sheldon. Mrs. Wolbers died on Nov. 10, 1905. Children surviving are: Mrs. Clarence Hughes, Sheldon; Mrs. John Jonas, Adrian, Minn.; George Wolbers, Le Mars; Mrs. Andy Niehus, Alton; and Carl Wolbers, Sheldon. One daughter and one son have passed on. There are 18 grandchildren, 4 sisters and one brother living. The sisters are: Miss Margaret Wolbers, Lansing, Iowa; Mrs. John Tentinger, Remsen; Mrs. A. C. Flemming, Orleans, Neb.; Mrs. R. W. Cahill, Lamotte, and the brother, Ben Wolbers of Lamotte, Iowa. Mr. Wolbers was a man of sterling integrity, devoted to his family, a kind neighbor and friend to all.
