JASPER - Herbert A. Lewis, 56, prominent Jasper citizen, and owner of the Jasper Steam Laundry, died suddenly at his apartment at the Hotel Cranford on Thursday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis were living at the Cranford while their daughters were in school. Thursday morning at 2 o'clock Mr. Lewis became ill, got up and took some medicine and told his wife he thought his illness was indigestion. He went back to bed and slept until 4:00 a.m., at which time he got up, put on his bathrobe and told Mrs. Lewis that the indigestion had returned. Mrs. Lewis suggested that she call a doctor for him but he stated that he didn't think he needed one, and walked into another room and lay down. While Mrs. Lewis was looking for a number in the telephone directory Mr. Lewis told her to get help. She ran out and called J. D. Myers, the manager, and Mr. Lewis breathed only a couple of times after Mr. Myers reached him. Death was due to angina pectoris. The remains were prepared for burial by A. B. Legg and Sons, and shipped to Mullins, South Carolina, Friday morning. He was a former citizen of that place, and the remains were carried back there where funeral and burial took place. Surviving are the wife and three children, Miss Dorothy Lewis, who is teaching school at Carbon Hill, Misses Elizabeth and Katherine Lewis, students at the University of Alabama. Mr. Lewis came to Alabama from Mullins, South Carolina six years ago and located in Gadsden. Two years ago he came to Jasper to take charge of the Jasper Steam Laundry, which he had owned for some time prior to his coming. He was a public spirited man, a member of the Brotherhood Class of the First Methodist Church. In the death of Mr. Lewis, Jasper loses a good and useful citizen.
