Herbert was born October 17, 1928 to Gottlob J. and Louise Regina (Klaudt) Ulmer near Sutton. He was baptized in the Hope Reformed Church on June 27, 1929 and confirmed at Emmanuel Reformed Church in 1944. He was raised on the family farm and attended District #20 school south of Sutton. On September 12, 1948 he was united in marriage to Myrna Holtz in Sutton and raised 3 children, Virgil, Kevin and Gail. They farmed south of Sutton until 1977 when they moved to town. He also worked as a carpenter in Sutton after his retirement from farming. He was member of the Emmanuel Reformed Church and served on the Consistory. He also served on the Federal Land Bank Board, the Farm Credit Board, the Sutton School Board; the Sutton Township Board and the Sutton Community Foundation Board. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Ernst; a sister, Anna Becker and a half brother, Ben. Survivors include his wife Myrna of Sutton; Gail Eliason and husband Bill of Topeka; two sons, Virgil and wife Gayle of Lagrange, Ohio and Kevin and his wife Mona of Newton, Iowa; four grandchildren, Joshua Eliason, Alicia Ulmer, Matthew Ulmer and Ashley Ulmer; five sisters, Esther Willis of Houston, Tx, Mary Ann Schafer of Delta, Ut, Doris Smith of Fort Worth, Tx, Louise Hoffmann of Pierce, Ne and Jeannette Rose of Omaha, Ne; one brother Robert Ulmer of Edina, Mn; one half sister Ruth Chadwick of Aurora, Co.; three half brothers Milton Ulmer of North Ridge, Ca., Friedhold Ulmer of Sutton, Ne and Ruben Ulmer of Hastings, Ne; and nieces and nephews.
