Description	:	Herbert Harold Howes, 59, president of Hynnnis State Teachers college, died of a heart attack Saturday afternoon at Hotel Bradford, Boston, He was in Boston to attend a meeting of the New England Teachers Training association, of which he was a past president. He had been in poor health several years. Mr Howes became head of Hyannis Teachers college 10 years ago, succeeding Francis A. Bagnall. He had been in poor health several years. Mr Howes became head of Hyannis Teachers college 10 years ago, succeeding Francis A. Bagnall. He had been in educational work 38 years, serving as principal for 18, and as superintendent from 1920 to 1930. He was a native of Dennis, son of Edwin Herbert and Chloe C. (Hall) Howes. After graduation from Dennis North High school and Bridgewater Normal school, Mr Howes obtained his Bachelor of Education degree from Rhode Island College of Education, and a Master of Education degree from Harvard. He studied also at Boston University. His first school post was as principal of Readsboro, Vt„ public school. He held principalships subsequently at Bread Brook, Conn.; Three Rivers, Pratt school, North Middleboro; Pierce School, North Attleboro; and was supervising principal of several schools in Everett. In 1920 he became superintendent of schools in Norwood; in 1927, superintendent in Medford. Mr Howes was president of the Massachusetts School Masters club, a member of the Old Colony Superintendents association, a member of the Advisory Council of the National Education association, a past president of Bridgewater Alumni association, a charter member and past president of Norwood Rotary club, past president of Hyannis Rotary club, a member of Phi Delta Kappa honorary scholastic fraternity, Kappa Delta Phi fraternity, and Mt. Horeb Lodge of Masons of West Harwich. Survivors are his widow, Mrs Cora W. (Luther) Howes; two sons, Luther H. of Hyannis and Ensign Harold D. Howes, U. S. N. R., of Bayonne, N. J.; a daughter, Mrs Barbara Nichols of Medford; two brothers, William G. of Hyannis and I. Grafton of Dennis, and five grandchildren.
