Nitschke, son of John E. and Emilia (Schaffer) Nitschke was born Nov. 6, 1926, southeast of Lehr, ND on the family farm. He started country school and then moved with his family to a farm 20 miles northeast of Ashley. He worked on the family farm. He was united in marriage to Mabel L. Nitschke Oct. 19, 1952, at Peace Lutheran Church, rural Ashley. They purchased the family farm in 1960. They were general farmers raising small grains and cattle. He had great pride in his cattle. They retired in 1992. They remained on the farm and rented out their land. Herbert kept busy helping his renters, family and friends, which he always enjoyed. Herbert enjoyed fishing and especially with his grandchildren. He liked woodworking and any handy work. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley where he had been a past greeter and usher. Survivors include his wife of Fredonia, one daughter, Delilah (Tim) Heil of Lemmon, SD, two sisters, Gladys (Harold) Blumhardt of Ashley and Delores (Richard) Hoff of Eureka and two grandsons, Tyler Heil and Brandon Heil. His parents and a brother, Alvin, preceded him in death. Honorary casketbearers were Johnny Nitschke, Tyler Heil and Brandon Heil. Casketbearers were Sidney Meidinger of Fredonia, Curtis Bendewald of Ashley, Gerald Hoff of Washburn, ND, Scottie Hoff of Eureka, Mark Bentz of Artas, SD and Jay Wik of Fergus Falls, MN. The organist was Steve Glaesmann and special music was performed by the Zion Lutheran Men's Quartet. Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley, ND, was in charge of arrangements.
