Herb was born on June 14, 1921 in Belt, MT to Fred and Sophia (Hohn) Goebel. His family moved to the Burlington ND area when he was two years old and he attended rural schools in that area. He was a member of Company 797 of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Kenmare area from 1939-1940. Herb was born on June 14, 1921 in Belt, MT to Fred and Sophia (Hohn) Goebel. His family moved to the Burlington ND area when he was two years old and he attended rural schools in that area. He was a member of Company 797 of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Kenmare area from 1939-1940. As a young adult Herb farmed near Foxholm until 1956 and was employed at the Westland Oil Company Retreading Plant for ten years. He often commented he could still smell burnt rubber. Following the closure of the retreading plant he drove semi trucks until 1970 and was employed by Thorsrud Supply as a metal fabricator until he retired in 1986. Herb married Beulah Bjergaard Houston on August 26, 1977. They made their home in Burlington. Herb was a dedicated husband who, in later years, lovingly cared for his wife until she required more extensive care. Then, he became a daily visitor and caregiver at Trinity Nursing Home until her death on October 3, 2012. Herb continued to reside in Burlington until he moved to Edgewood Vista in 2017. Herb was a faithful member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church and the Burlington Senior Citizens where he especially enjoyed having coffee and rolls. He was a member of the Moose Lodge where he and Beulah spent many Saturday nights dancing the night away. Also, they enjoyed touring the country in their fifth-wheel camper. Herb especially enjoyed playing country western music on his guitar and helping his wife with her crafts. He was a tinkerer at heart, but sometimes he had to give-in and take the project to a professional for repair! An avid hunter in his younger years, he still enjoyed a trip to the gun range to challenge Dave and Curt to a shooting competition. Herb’s loving family includes his stepchildren: Carol Robbins (Tom Fauchald) of Grand Forks, Curtis (Joan) Houston of Minot and David (Susie) Houston of Taylors SC; step grandchildren: Chris (Marsha) Houston of Bismarck, April (Ken) Wheeler and Dawn (Tim) Holifield all of SC; five step grandchildren; siblings: Francis Goebel of Minot and Sally Melland of Williston and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Herb was preceded in death by his parents, wife and siblings: Theodore (1925), John (1988), Norbert (2001), Clarence (2008), Elvina (1994), Marie Fuchs (2011) and Delores Feist (2016).
