Read More	Pioneer Called Home The community was shocked Saturday when the news was flashed over the wire of the sudden death of Herman Meisgeier, Sr. Death came to him while in the farm yard, due to a severe attack of heart failure, from which he had been suffering for some time. Herman Carl Meisgeier was born in the village of Rebisch, Saxony, in Germany, December 19, 1843, where he received his earliest training and religious education in the Ev. Luth. Faith. Thus equipped with a well established, broad educational foundation, secular as wellas sacred, which is a characteristic feature of the German educational institutions, his parents decided to immigrate to America, the land of unlimited possibilities, and the Eldorado of the European immigrants where the possibilities of making a living were so favorable to those of determination, courage and strong will power. The voyage in those days simply could not be compared with the safety and convenience of our present modern conditions, and was not only a daring undertaking, but required almost superhuman courage and strength. Nevertheless his parents with their family dared it and arrived on this soil in Sept. 1852. The voyage was extraordinary in its sad events and full of sore trials and afflictions. While on the ship a deadly disease, the scarlet fever broke out and his mother and three brothers, Frank Henry and Louis became victims of the terrible ravaging plague. Frank and Henry died while on the ship and their mortal remains were intrusted to the all-devouring billows of the gluttonous sea. Louis died soon after landing and was buried in New York. With the recovered mother, the rest of the afflicted family journeyed on to Cleveland, O., locating in the near-by town called Warrensville. Three days after their arrival at Cleveland, another sever blow from the hands of divine Providence fell upon them, when God summoned to his final rest the head and supporter of the family. About 3 years the family made its home with a relative at Warrensville. It was a time of dire want and need; the children were obliged to work for fabulously low wages, but they persevered. In 1856 they came to Taylorsville, Iowa. True to their faith and church they joined the Luth. church at St. Sebald, here he was confirmed in the Ev. Luth. faith by the now sainted Rev. Grossman. On September 30, 1873 he was united in marriage to Miss Alma Nathalie Nus which union God blessed with eight children; Ida, now Mrs. G. Eckheart, Bertha, now Mrs. W. Eckheart, Anna, now Mrs. C. Streicher, Gretchen, now Mrs. G. Knapp, Edna, now Mrs. Art Putnam, Clara and Laura, the only son Ernest died when 7 months old. His life in this community, his remarkable success is too well known as to enlarge upon. The fact that he has no enemies but hosts of friends tells plainer than words ever could of the esteen he enjoyed by old and young. He was one of the oldest settlers in this community, but what sounds still better, he was among the first to organize our Ev. Luth. congregation at Arlington and whose faithfulness to that church until his blessed end is beyond reproach. A year ago this winter he was very ill and we became quite alarmed and worried but God in his mercy stayed the hand of the destroyer and spared his life. And this winter in spite of his frail constitution was quite well. The shock therefore, was all the greater when on the 24th the report was spread of his sudden and unexpected departure. We all are familiar with the circumstances. But while it matters little to the faithful child of God when and how and where he dies we realize the sadness of his family and relatives, but can asure them that the Loving God in whom he so firmly believed granted him a painless, quiet death. He leaves to mourn his death, wife, one brother Carl, one sister, Mrs. Hugo Nus, seven daughters, thirteen grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. His age is 73 yrs. 3 mo. and 5 days. A large concourse of the friends and relatives of the deceased attended the funeral conducted at the home Tuesday afternoon, by Rev. Chr. Rembold, after which the remains were laid to rest in Taylorsville cemetery. From The Arlington News dated March 29, 1917, page 1.
