He was born Sept. 19, 1916 in McCallsburg, Iowa, to Torres E. and Josephine Brekke Thompson. He married Naomi F. Bush May 1, 1942. She preceded him in death Jan. 1, 2005. A resident of Ottumwa since 1941, he graduated from McCallsburg High School and attended Iowa State Teachers College. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a P.O.W. held in Germany. He served in the Army Reserves for 15 years and attended many reunions of his unit in later years. He worked for the Ottumwa Postal Service carrying mail on Routes 7 and 2 for 30 years, retiring in 1973. He was a state president of the Rural Mail Carriers of Iowa and a delegate to the National Rural Carrier convention. He farmed with his son for many years, enjoyed life, visiting with people, singing and going to Arizona and Colorado to visit family. He was an avid bowler and bowled in many leagues. He was a member of the East End Prebyterian Church where he served as elder, trustee and choir member. He was a lifetime member and Past Commander of O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 of the American Legion, serving as chaplain of the firing squad. He attended many state and national American Legion conventions, serving as commander of the Fifth District in 1993. He presented Legion Awards to elementary students for many years, played Santa and cooked at many fish fries for the Legion. He was also a member of the Walter B. Schafer Post No. 775 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a 50-year member of the Empire Masonic Lodge No. 269 A.F. & A.M. and a former member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 347. He was a charter member of the Wapello Chief Barbershop Chorus. Surviving are three daughters, Linda Robbins of Tuscon, Ariz., Evonne Mahaskey of Ottumwa and Patty Laible of Grand Junction, Colo., a son, Ronnie Thompson of Ottumwa; eleven grandchildren, Mark Miller of Tuscon, Ariz., John Miller of Carmel, Ind., Diana Nottingham of Tuscon, Ariz., Scott Mahaskey of Washington D.C., Brenda Moats of Kansas City, Mo., Lara Feigitsch of Arvada, Colo., Brad Laible of Ft. Collins, Colo., Jason Laible of Las Vegas, Nev., Carrie Cobler, Heather Van Engelenhoven and Katie Thompson, all of Ottumwa; ten great-grandchildren, Tom and Amanda Miller, Bailey and Bennett Nottingham, Autumn Miller, Alley and Conner Laible, Megan and Josie Cobler and Lydia Van Engelenhoven. He is preceded in death by five brothers, Julius, Sanford, Maurice, Earl and Francis Thompson and four sisters, Myrtle Harrendorf, Lillian Bernard, Judith Thelma Chelsvig and Bernice Meyer. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the East End Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Kate Stangl officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Military services will be conducted by O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post No. 775 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Casketbearers will be Ronnie Thompson, Mike Mahaskey, Dick Laible, Kevin Thompson, Greg Ripley, Steve Wilkinson, Mike Graham and Jim Rumans. Honorary casketbearers will grandchildren, great-grandchildren, Joyce Thompson, Mel Robbins, Ed Miller, Mike Renfrew, Ralph Brammer and hte firing squad. Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. followed by Masonic service at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Memorials have been established to East End Presbyterian Church or the O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 of the American Legion.
