Description	:	Herman Huckfeldt was born August 21, 1875 on a farm five miles north of Holstein. His parents were Joseph and Mary Huckfeldt. On January 13, 1897, Herman and Anna Marie Winter were united in Holy Matrimony. At this time, Joseph retired from farming and moved to Holstein with his wife Mary. Read More	Herman Huckfeldt was born August 21, 1875 on a farm five miles north of Holstein. His parents were Joseph and Mary Huckfeldt. On January 13, 1897, Herman and Anna Marie Winter were united in Holy Matrimony. At this time, Joseph retired from farming and moved to Holstein with his wife Mary. Herman and Anna remained on the homeplace, farming the land until 1940. Herman and Anna are the parents of thirteen children, who were born on the homeplace. Both parents worked diligently to provide food and clothing for this family. They farmed the land and raised cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks and geese. During January, one bedroom was vacated and incubators were set up to hatch approximately 800 chickens which provided meat and eggs. Extra eggs were sold to buy groceries. This idea worked well until some lazy neighbor decided it was easier to steal chickens than to raise them himself. The highlight of the year came in the Fall when the Lutheran Church Mission Festival was held in a grove of trees on the Huckfeldt farm. Approximately 300 to 400 persons attended this three-service Festival. Most Lutherans from a twenty-five mile radius attended. Plants were nailed to tree stumps for serving tables and seat. There was always a pop stand and lots of homemade ice cream. Of course, the ice was gotten from a pond the previous winter and stored in an ice house covered with straw. Herman and Anna were always willing to lend a helping hand when need. Herman dragged three miles of roads for many years. He also dug graves by hand and bricked them. They were called upon many times to sit up in the home for deceased friends and relatives. Aging and poor health forced Herman and Anna to retire from the farm and move into Holstein in 1940. They lived in Holstein until Herman's death on November 26, 1952. Anna lived to the age of ninety-three. She was deceased on September 15, 1972. Their children and grandchildren are listed below, beginning with Alma, their oldest and ending with Marvel Ann, their youngest. Alma was born on December 15, 1897 and died on November 26, 1974. She married Art Oelschlager on February 17, 1918. Their children are Donald, born May 21, 1919, deceased May 21, 1919; Lois, born April 6, 1921; Mary Ellen, born June 30, 1930 and Jane Rae, born October 25, 1935. Amanda was born on October 8, 1899 and died on December 26, 1956. She married Ted Gray on May 10, 1922. Ted Gray Jr. was born on March 1, 1923. Esther was born on January 8, 1901 and died on February 24, 1901. Cecilia was born on February 16, 1902. She married Robert Hendricksen on July 5, 1922. Their daughters are Gerene, born October 2, 1923 and Eiliene, born on October 1, 1925. Clarence (Clark) was born on February 14, 1904. He married Esther Augustine on February 22, 1927. Their daughter Carl Ruth was born on March 10, 1933 and died on June 10, 1934. After Esther's death, Clark married Dorothy Katzberg in 1973. Erma was born July 7, 1906. Her marriage to Harley Simms took place on April 5, 1923. Their daughter Valonne was born on December 21, 1926. Following Harley's death, Erma married Floyd Smith in 1973. Opal was born on July 7, 1908. She married Walter Schmidt on December 16, 1925. On June 17, 1974, Opal was deceased. Their children are Robert Lee, born on April 26, 1927; Betty, born on October 2, 1929 and Shirley, born on March 5, 1936. Ruby was born on April 14, 1913. On December 30, 1931, she married Lee Mathers. Their children are Janice, born October 25, 1932; Georgeanna, born on November 17, 1935 and William (Bill) born May 8, 1937 and deceased on April 6, 1984. Delmer was born on September 24, 1914 and died on July 24, 1953. He was united in marriage to Elsie Hinz on June 14, 1938. Their son Vaughn was born on February 24, 1940. Nola was born on September 9, 1917. On April 19, 1936, she and Denzil Nelson were married. Their son Donald, was born on February 13, 1938. Curtis was born on October 22, 1919. He married Mildred Delatour on November 21, 1945. Their children are Steve, born May 14, 1947; Mona Rae, born on May 26, 1948 and Mildred (Midge), born on June 14, 1949. Fern was born on March 23, 1921. She married Daryl Layton on June 2, 1945. With this marriage, Fern had two step-sons. Robert was born on March 6, 1937 and Richard was born on November 28, 1939. Marvel Ann was born on September 4, 1924. On June 25, 1941, she was married to Erwin Plambeck. Their children are Dennis, born on July 11, 1942 and deceased on February 28, 1977 and Eilene Kay, born on August 11, 1946.
