Joseph Huckfeldt was born October 3, 1852 in Segeberg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. They were married in Germany on December 28, 1870. Two yeares later they came to the United States, staying in Michigan State for a while. Joseph Huckfeldt was born October 3, 1852 in Segeberg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. They were married in Germany on December 28, 1870. Two yeares later they came to the United States, staying in Michigan State for a while. His father (Joseph F Huckfeldt, 1820-1908, mother, Ida Pomp, 1824-1893) served seven years of active service in the German army and was in the 1848 war. This was one of the main reason Joe and Marie decided to come to America. In October 1973, they came to Adams County, Nebraska. They filed a claim on SE1/4-Section-4; T-6-N, R-12-W. Patent recorded March 14, 1899. They had previously bought from C B & Q Railroad on the NE1/4-Section-27; T-6-N; R-12-W...also the SE1/4 and S1/2 of NE1/4-Section 22; T-6-N; R-12-W...also in 1900, from August and Ella Schroeder, the S1/2 -Section 10: T-6-N; R-12-W. They spent the rest of their years in Adams county except for 3 years (1910-1913) in Elwood, Gosper County, Nebraska, where they owned some land. In the early years, Joe worked for a time in Omaha to get money to run the farm. Marie worked at a boarding house in Juniata, then the county seat, walking back and forth to help hold down the homestead. They story is told that one weekend her employers insisted that she drive the team and buggy home instead of walking. When she got back to Juniata late Sunday evening, the Lap-Robe was missing from the buggy, so she left the team at the stable and walked back till she found the robe. She was afraid to ask for help or take the team again. According to Records, Adams County History, by Dorothy Weyer Creigh, in 1887 the Railroad located the Depot on the NE1/4- Section -27, owned by Joseph Huckfeldt. Deed Book 23, pg. 447 shows that Joe and Maria Huckfeldt deeded the North 60 acres of NE1/4 - Section 27 to John M Ragan, on April 11, 1887 for $1.00 (see Chapter XXVI - "Holstein") The town of Holstein was platted in 1887. 100.28 acres of Sections 26 and 27. Avenues North and South, Streets East and West, mostly 60 feet wide, and a few 70 feet. The story is told that a town board meeting, they were having a time agreeing on a name for the town. Someone saw Joe walking down the street, to they called him in, telling him their problem. He suggested Holstein for Schleswig-Holstein, Germany (northern peninsula later turned back to Denmark). In 1904, Joseph had his residence heated by steam. He had his entire plant installed by the 9th December, Joseph and Marie had 10 children: Herman (1875-1952), Robert (1877-1949), Christina (1879-1973), Harry (1883-1972), Ernest (1887-1946), Amalia (1889-1958), Emma (died 1978) and three who died in infancy - Carl, Sophia and Amanda.
