He married Elenora Louise Weyemiller 10 Sep 1869 in Allamakee, IA and at the time of the 1885 Iowa census, they had 7 children, all born in Iowa: Hulda, Louis H., Charles Edwin, Edward, Ella L., Carrie M. and Pearl. Elenora died shortly after the census was taken. In about 1890, Herman married again to Ella T. (sometimes recorded as Ellen T.) Herman was a Civil War Veteran. + + + + + + + + Hermann Friedrich Wilhelm Marten was born in Soldin, Kreis Soldin, Brandenburg, Prussia ( now Mysliborz, Poland) and emigrates with his parents, sister Henrietta Kehrberg and brothers August, Frederick and Frank a month before his 13th birthday in Aug 1858 aboard the ship SAXONIA. The family homestead is on land bisected by the Lafayette and Taylor township border in Allamakee County. Land for Thompson Corner cemetery is on the NW corner of that property. Herman's parents, a sister and many nieces and nephews are buried there. His Naturalization records in Waukon were filed in 1882. Recorded as Harmon Martin, he enlisted in Company F, Iowa 9th Cavalry Regiment on 03 Oct 1863 and was mustered out on 03 Feb 1866 at Little Rock, Arkansas. The Ninth Cavalry Regiment was organized in the fall of 1863, and mustered in at Davenport, November 30, and was represented by nearly every county in the State. It was moved to Benton Barracks, where it remained until April 14th, when it started for Little Rock. Its field of service was in Arkansas and its most active service was when Steele was in a state of siege at Little Rock. It was engaged in frequent short, sharp skirmishes. It took no part in great battles of the war; still it performed two years' laborious and gallant service. It marched over two thousand miles moved by steamboat and rail seventeen hundred miles, and, in scouting over 8,000 miles. It lost one hundred and sixty four men by sickness and fifteen by wounds. It was mustered out at Little Rock, in detachments in February and March, 1866. By the time of his return from Arkansas, brothers Julius and Frank had given up farming and moved to Lansing and were operating a grocery. Whether he enters into partnership immediately is not known, but Herman marries Ellnora Weymiller Sept. 12, 1869 and is a grocer with his brother Julius in 1870. He is listed in the membership roster of the Lansing German Evangelical Church until 1873 but not in 1874, which probably indicates he left Lansing for New Albin in that year. Brother Julius looks to have moved to Ackley, Iowa in the same time period, a few years after Frank had moved there and started the first of several business ventures in that place. County land Transfer Records in the Auditor's office in Waukon, show that Herman purchased a 1/4 section of land in Section 31 of the county from his brother-in-law Carl Baske on July 6 1872. That land is adjacent to Frederick Marten's land, or next to the home farm. Herman sells that land to Patrick Callahan on July 18, 1875. It is not known if he actually lived and farmed there. He is not on the Columbus Ridge church roster in those years. His two oldest children were baptized in March 1873 by the minister who served both churches. That minister showed that son Lewis was born in Lansing in September 1872. It is likely, at the least, that Herman moved the family to New Albin by late 1875 and established a General Store there until sometime between 1900 and 1910. Possibly in 1906 when he becomes involved in his son Lewis' business in La Crosse. Herman also was President, if not part owner, of the New Albin Bank for several years. In the mid-1890's, sons Lewis and Charles become traveling salesmen for the Rider-Wallis Co. in Dubuque. The company sold White Elephant work clothes and dry goods. Likely a supplier for Herman and his brothers in Ackley. In 1903, Lewis and Charles purchase the Mons Anderson Co. in La Crosse and incorporate as the Martin Bros. Co. manufacturer of Lion Brand working man's clothes and jobbers of men's furnishings. Lewis took the role of President and Treas., Charles was Vice President and Lewis' wife Lillian was Secretary. Son Edward soon joined them in the business. In 1906, Charles and Edward move to Aberdeen, S.D. where they open a Martin Bros. Co. of their own. All four daughters follow their brothers to Aberdeen. At that time Herman takes on the role of Vice President in son Lewis' business in La Crosse and holds that title until his death in 1924. He continued to reside in New Albin throughout that time. Like his brothers Julius, Ferdinand and Frank, Herman adopts the spelling of Martin in the early 1870's. His house stills stands but is in very poor condition in 2000. Ellnora died in 1885 when two of his children were less than 3 years old. Herman remarries about 4 years later to a 28 yo woman named Ella Donahue, with whom, he remained until his death 37 years later. He is buried with Ella in St. Joseph's Catholic cemetery, however according to Woodmansee cemetery records he was buried with first wife Ellnora in the New Albin City Cemetery. Herman's younger children were raised in the Catholic faith of their step mother and it appears Herman converted as well before the 1895 census. Steven L. Goettel
