Herman was born July 4, 1932, to Theophile (TJ) and Margaret (Sass) Gollnick on the family farm near Webster. He enjoyed knowing that everyone celebrated his birthday by shooting off fireworks for the 4th of July. He attended school at District 188 in the Highland township and worked at George Schmidt's dairy farm in Webster before moving to Aberdeen. Herman worked as a machinist at K.O. Lee Company for 32 years, never missing a day of work, and was honored as a dedicated employee when he retired in 1998. He was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aberdeen. Herman fell in love with Jeanette Anderson and her three young children in 1971. They married at Presentation College Chapel on Nov. 29, 1975. In addition to Jeanette's children, they were blessed with a son on Christmas Day in 1978. Herman was a kind, patient and loving husband, father and grandfather. His wonderful sense of humor helped others see the bright side of life. Herman was always willing to lend a hand to people in need and an ear to people who needed to talk. Herman was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener. He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren who enjoyed plenty of lap time and he was never too busy to sit down and spend time with them. He will be greatly missed and his memory will be cherished by his family and friends. Thankful for having shared his life are his wife of Aberdeen; four children, Alan (Michelle) Papke of Swansboro, N.C., and their children Kristen and Melissa; Janet (Troy) Borchard of Pierre and their children Tom (Brooks) and Victoria; Kristi (Steve) Anderson of Barnum, Minn., and their children Korey, Karissa, Andrew and Alec; and Jonathan Gollnick of Sioux Falls; his siblings, David Gollnick of Bristol, Olive Block of Sisseton, Geraldine (Daryl) Steiner of Eden, Georgia (Raymond) Janisch of Eden, and Treva (Darrell) Bowling of Isanti, Minn. Herman was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Ambrose, Raymond, and Norbert. Gift bearers will be his granddaughters, Victoria, Kristen, Melissa and Karissa. Casket bearers will be Jim Block, Tom Borchard, Craig Bowling, Bob Gollnick, Korey Papke, Blaine Steiner, Doug Steiner, and Mark Steiner. Published in the Aberdeen News on 7/8/2005.
