Mr. Spiering was born in Dumadel, Germany, on Feb. 22, 1847. His wife died about fifteen years ago and he has been making his home with his daughter ever since. He is survived by a family of grown children, all whom are married. Rev. Herman Spiering of Pierce County is a son. One son lives in Berlin and another lives in Tacoma, Washington. The son who lives in Tacoma may come here for the funeral. Mrs. Frank Stengel and Mrs. William Krueger are daughters. Norfolk Daily News - 08/28/1914 - Page 2 - Funeral Services for Herman Spiering, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Carl Schultz, on South Second Street, will be held Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the Schultz home and at 2:30 at Christ German Lutheran Church. Rev. J. P. Mueller will have charge of the services. Mr. Spiering was born in Dumadel, Pomerania, Germany, on Feb. 22, 1847. He learned the brick mason's trade and in 1870 he was united in marriage to Miss Augusta Schultz. Nine children were born to this union. The family came to Norfolk in 1892 and Mrs. Spiering died in 1899. The surviving children are: Herman, Richard, Emil, and Carl Spiering. Mrs. Carl Schultz, Mrs. Frank Stengel, Mrs. William Krueger and Mrs. George Stevens. The German words on the tombstone is a Bible verse. Luke 2:29-30 which in English is: "Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation."
