Manske Called By Death EARLY PIONEER ANE PROMINENT BUSINESS MAN DIES OF HEART ATTACK This community was shocked and saddened beyond expression to learn of the death of Herman J. Manske last Saturday noon from a heart attack. Death came to him as he was driving his car home to dinner from his filling station on west Main street. He was stricken as he drove into the driveway of his home, the car veering into a snow drift and stalling. Neighbors going to the car a few minutes later found dead. Mr. Manske was one of the few remaining members of the first colony of Wisconsin settlers who came to Pierce county in 1869. The only survivors of that colony now living in Pierce county are Wm. Manske, Mrs. Mary Otto and Mrs. H. F. Magdanz, all of Pierce, and Gus F. Lierman, of Hadar. Deceased would have been 76 years old had be lived until April 21st next. He was born in Germany April 21, 1861, and came to the United States with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Manske, when he was seven years old, locating in Wisconsin. In 1869 the family and a number of other Wisconsin families traveled behind ox teams to Nebraska, arriving at West Point on July 4, 1869. From there the family came to Pierce county, taking a homestead two and one-half miles northeast of Pierce. Upon arriving at his majority Mr. Manske farmed the farm just across the road from his father's homestead. He was united in marriage to Miss Bertha Magdanz, daughter of another pioneer family, on August 31, 1882. The couple celebrated the 50th anniversary of their wedded life in 1932. Mr. and Mrs. Manske lived on their farm northeast of Pierce until twenty years ago when they moved to Pierce and purchased a residence in the southwest part of town. Mr. Manske also engaged in business here--establishing the Home Filling Station, which he operated successfully up to the time of his death. Surviving are his wife, four sons, Gustav, Henry, Otto and Julius, two daughters, Mrs. Fred Gloe and Mrs. Julius Splittgerber, all of Pierce, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. Also a brother, William, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Otto, both of Pierce. Deceased was a most excellent citizen and honored business man. For many years he was a member of the city council and served several terms as city assessor. He was always interested in and gave his best efforts, morally and financially, to civic and community progress and growth. He was a member of the Community Club, the Pierce Country Golf Club and the County Historical Society, being the eighth member to sign the charter upon its organization some four years ago. As a devoted member of the Zion Lutheran church he exemplified the Christian spirit in his daily walks and in his business dealings with his fellow men. He will be remembered by his friends for his spirit of simplicity, modesty and rugged honesty. He was one of the pioneers and princely Noblemen who conquered the vast spaces of the great wilderness of the west. The story of those brave people has been told and retold and their memory becomes more precious as time goes on. His pastor paid a splendid tribute to his memory at the funeral services, likening him to the faithful servant found watching when the Lord appeared in His Glory. He truly had fought a good fight, kept the faith and looked forward to the Great Adventure with abiding confidence and boundless faith. Our old friend of Nearly a half century knew that beyond the gates of the sunset there is another land--the shadowless land of eternal noon, where Faith shines more brightly--where, as the sun sinks lower, Hope lifts her voice in a higher key and sings the song of fruition. Dear One! We've been long together, Through pleasant and through stormy weather; 'Tis hard to part when friends are dear-- Perhaps 'twi'll cost a sigh, a tear; Then steal away, give little warning, (Choose Thine Own Good Time) Say not Good Night--but in some brighter clime-- Bid me Good Morning! Funeral services for deceased were held at the Zion Lutheran church at two o'clock Monday afternoon with the pastor, Rev. M. F. Scheips, in charge. Services at the home preceded the last rites at the church. The church was filled to capacity with many relatives and neighbors who gathered to bestow a last tribute to a worthy citizen and a beloved friend. Floral remembrances from relatives, civic organizations and friends were many and beautiful in profusion. Pall bearers were Messrs. W. F. Rosenkotter, Lawrene Kolterman, John Magdanz, L. H. Gruett, Gus Otto and Ed Fullner. Interment was made in the family lot in Prospect View cemetery.
