Read More	Chapin - Herman Jacob Monts, 89, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, July 3, 2010, at the Haltiwanger Building of the Heritage at Lowman Home, White Rock, SC. Born June 26, 1921, in the Chapin area of Lexington County, he was the youngest child of the late Edward Franklin and Minnie Alice Lindler Monts. Prior to moving with Mrs. Monts to the Lowman Home, they lived at 116 Jake Meetze Road, Chapin. Preceding him in death were his sister, Mabel Louise Monts and infant grandson, Taylor Monts Falls. Herman was a life-long member of St. Thomas Lutheran Church. Herman served in the U. S. Army, World War II, as did his three older brothers. The four Monts brothers were honored on stage during a special tribute at Columbia's First Baptist Church's annual Celebration of Liberty, July 2, 2006. Herman entered the Army in September, 1942. Basic training was held at Camp Bullis, Texas. He served as a Forward Observer, working with Telephone and Telegraph Communications for the Twelfth Field Artillery, B Battery, landing on Omaha Beach on June 11, just east of St. Lo, France. On the night of July 13, 1944, a German Artillery shell crashed into B Battery's OP. The blast killed Corporal Garland N. Norman and critically injured PFC Monts in both legs. Herman has always credited Corporal Norman for instinctively protecting his life, as Norman took the bulk of the blast and lay across Herman's body. A day never went by the past sixty-six years that Herman did not remember Corporal Norman's Christian witness, guidance, wisdom, unwavering courage nor Norman's excellent example of steadfast love of and devotion to Mrs. Norman. After the blast, Herman remained in various hospitals until he was given an honorable discharge on July 13, 1945, then returned home to Chapin to continue his lengthy recovery in stateside Veterans Hospitals. He received both the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for Gallantry in Action. Herman's priorities in life were his faith in God and providing care for his beloved family. As a disabled veteran, he found what work he could to provide for his wife and children. He spent uncountable hours of his post war years on the waters of Lake Murray. He served as a fishing guide to people from all walks of life, including many prominent South Carolinians, such as D. L. Scurry, G. Richard Shafto, Charles Batson and former Governor, the late James F. Byrnes. He was well regarded and recommended as one of the best fishing guides in the state. Mr. Herman, as he was affectionately called by many, had a gift for knowing where the fish were biting, especially large mouth black bass. He took great pride in gardening and eagerly shared his bounty of vegetables with family and friends. In the fall, he could be found in his yard picking up pecans from his large, nut laden trees. He enjoyed cutting his huge yard of grass in the summertime and the cutting and splitting of firewood. He was happiest when he was kept busy outdoors. He never enjoyed being idle. Whenever the weather was nice he loved visiting with his growing family and with friends outside on the front porch and/or carport. There was never a lack of good conversation mingled with ample laughter and tremendous love. Left behind to cherish these and many more memories are his wife of nearly 64 years, Faye Summer Monts; daughters, Laura (Charles) Meetze of Irmo and Annette (Fred) Falls of Chapin; sons, Larry E., Norman W. 'Monk' (Debbie) and Lee A. Monts of Chapin and Columbia. Grandchildren are Kimberly Meetze (Tommy) Allnutt, Clint (Melissa) Monts, Bethany Monts (Steve) Hobbs, Brandon M. Falls, Clayton A. Falls, McKenzie E. Monts and Chantz G. Monts. Great-grandchildren are Connor Allnutt and Quintin Monts. Step great-grandson is Ethan McGaughey. He is also survived by all three older brothers, now in their nineties; Wilbur Franklin, Lloyd Calvin, and David Sidney Monts. A number of nieces and nephews share many fond memories of their Uncle Herman. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at St. Thomas Lutheran Church Fellowship Building, and the funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at the church. Officiating will be Pastor Larry Hagerty and Pastor Vickie Powell. A military burial service will conclude in the church cemetery. The family will be at the home of Fred and Annette Falls, 237 Jake Meetze Road, Chapin. The family would like to graciously thank the staff and residents of the Haltiwanger Building at the Heritage of Lowman Home for all their love and support to Herman and Faye over these past four years. Also to the Dorn Veterans Hospital, Columbia, S.C. for their compassionate medical care given for post war injuries and illnesses. And a warm thank you to the sitters from Be Well for being with our dad at night for the past two weeks, Your kindnesses are deeply appreciated.
