Description	:	HERMAN "JOHN HERMAN" BRINKHOFF He was born October 27, 1852 in Wether, West Phalen, Germany. When he was sixteen he and his father Casper Brikhoff came to the United States. In 1882 he returned to Germany and married Wilhelmina Louise Mittelberg. The couple returned to America and settled in the Cook, Nebraska area, near relatives of Louise. They lived there nearly five years. Read More	HERMAN "JOHN HERMAN" BRINKHOFF He was born October 27, 1852 in Wether, West Phalen, Germany. When he was sixteen he and his father Casper Brikhoff came to the United States. In 1882 he returned to Germany and married Wilhelmina Louise Mittelberg. The couple returned to America and settled in the Cook, Nebraska area, near relatives of Louise. They lived there nearly five years. In 1886 they came to Colorado and became one of the first settlers homesteading north of Idalia, where they build a two-room sod house, enduring all the privations and hardships of the early days. They lived there until nearly 1900 when they built a small frame house and continued to build on to their home as they could. Herman farmed the land and did plastering jobs and hand dug wells in the community to supplement the income to support his growing family. Wilhelmina Louise Mittelberg Brinkhoff was born at Brockhorst, January 16, 1866 and became Herman's bride at the age 16. They became the parents of eleven children: Wilhelmina "Minnie" L. (Brinkhoff) Hughey (John) Emma Lidke (Richard) Henry Brinkhoff Sophia Ingalls (Dwight) Herman H. Brinkhoff Anna Motsenbocker (Luther) William Brinkhoff Louise Boling (Mark) Helen McCommon (Terry) Hilda Fellows (Evan) Frieda Brenner (August) Being short on cash but long on faith, the family, along with neighbors, met with neighbors for church services in their homes until 1887 when Herman and others in the community built a sod church called "The St. Johns German Evangelical Church of West Phalen. A frame church was erected in 1910 and rebuilt again in 1950. It is now called the "United Church of Christ." Herman died January 3, 1932. and Louise December 20, 1935. They were laid to rest across the road from the church they helped found. Daughter Minnie L. (Brinkhoff) Hughey 52235763.
