Dad grew up in the Czech community of Danvers and was proud of his Czech heritage. His mother, Anna, brothers Dick, Dan and Bobby, his sister Irene, along with Dad, moved to Toston on March 1, 1932. He often reminisced about that day and their trip in the Model-A Ford, co-owned by his brother Dick and Frank Slifka. Sister Marcella finished school in Lewistown and joined the family a year later. Herman graduated from Broadwater County High School where he enjoyed playing on the football team. He worked on the family farm in Broadwater County, worked for the railroad in California while living with his sister Irene and her husband, Chuck Greaves, and was working construction in Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. He married Shirley M. Greene in Townsend at the Methodist Church on June 12, 1949. Together they raised four children: Gary, who preceded him in death in 1973; Marcia (husband Royal Magnus, children Greg, Jessica and Zane) of Alpine, Calif.; Dan of Boise, Idaho; and Denise (children Marrissa and Kendra) of Helena. Herman and Shirley divorced in 1976, but remained close. He married Anna Fendler on July 4, 1976, and they later divorced. His brothers Bobby, Dick and Dan, and sisters, Marcella and Irene, preceded him in death. Dad was elected to the Montana State House of Representatives in 1958 and was re-elected in 1960. A staunch Democrat, he loved to joke that anything that went wrong, from too much rain to too little rain, was the fault of the Republicans. During his work in construction, he helped to build the Toston Dam and the interstate near Bozeman. However, Herman's passion was always farming, and he owned his own farm in the Crow Creek Valley. He loved the out-of-doors, camping, fishing and horses. Dad had many quotes to share, such as "you don't live long enough to learn everything the hard way," "don't change horses in the middle of a stream," "steady by jerks" and "do SOMEthing, even if it's wrong." He also shared his joy of reading with his children, and often said he'd had a good life and was thankful. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at Sonheaven Assisted Living in Helena on Thursday, June 17, at 2 p.m., and at the Methodist Church in Townsend on Saturday, June 19 at 2 p.m. Honorary pallbearers are: Dan Moudree, Royal Magnus, Greg Magnus, Zane Magnus, Bob Moudree, Doug Field and Scott Hudson.
