Description	:	Herman listed his place of birth at NY state, however there may be a Naturalization document suggesting otherwise. He may have fought in the War of 1812 and seems to have a military record though it has not been verified. His son Charles lists his place of birth as Saratoga Springs, NY, which is where folks like general George Washington went to recuperate after various battles. He was previously married in NY to Sarah and they had at least two children: Sarah Jane and Charles Solomon Baker, the famous western photographer. Herman was 20 some years... He may have fought in the War of 1812 and seems to have a military record though it has not been verified. His son Charles lists his place of birth as Saratoga Springs, NY, which is where folks like general George Washington went to recuperate after various battles. He was previously married in NY to Sarah and they had at least two children: Sarah Jane and Charles Solomon Baker, the famous western photographer. Herman was 20 some years older than 2nd wife, Nancy A Elger/Alger. They married in Coote's Store, VA, and had four children: Nancy, Mary Francis, John Kline and William Franklin. Their birth records state that they were born in Brush, Pocahantas, VA. In the various censuses he was listed as a clock repairer, laborer, farmer and I believe he may have also been a merchant of some sort. I believe one census lists them as having some sort of an eating place in VA. They appear to be Mennonite, Brethren or Baptist. They left the Shenandoah Valley at the time of the Civil War and for an unknown reason settled in Lima, Allen County, Ohio which is where you can find his Last Will & Testament. There is a town there called Alger so maybe they went because of relatives of Barbara's or because that is where the wagon train or the train stopped. Sheridan provided a buggy and a horse to all the Brethren, Dunkards, Mennonites (all pacifists) to leave the South before he burned all the bridges, mills, tanneries, fields, etc. Apparently another group went north to a city in VA where evacuees could board a train that went to Ohio, PA & elsewhere. Lima being a big train town may have made the decision for them. We do not know when daughter, Mary Francis died, or where she was buried so she is not listed with Find a Grave as of this writing. She married a William Kushmaul Sr. who eventually moved to Arkansas. Daughter Nancy married a David Saxton in Ohio and appears to have died in childbirth. Son Charles married a 15 year old girl in Miami Co after he was released as a prisoner of war. (He was a bugler in the NY Calvary, was shot with a muscat ball, & imprisoned near where Herman and Barbara lived. The cemetery where they are buried is the Sugar Creek Church of the Brethren.
