Hessling in Grant township, three miles north of this city, on Monday occurred the death of Herman Peck, one of the respected and honored pioneer settlers of the county. He had been ill since Thanksgiving of last year and failed fast, death being due chiefly to age. He was a man who had lived a clean and manly life and was ready to bow in submission to the will of his Master. He had gained the deepest admiration and respect of his neighbors and friends because of his manly character and square treatment of everyone. He was a hard worker during his life and he had contributed materially to the upbuilding of the county and community in which he lived so many years. He lived to rear a family of children who are a credit to the community in which they live and who grieve deeply at the loss of a devoted and kind father. Herman Peck was born in Germany on October 3, 1830. On the 5th of April, 1857, he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Groon. Shortly after they came to the United States and located in Illinois where they lived twelve years after which they moved to Jones county where they resided five years. In the year 1874 they moved to Carroll county and located on the old homestead in Sheridan township. To the union were born six daughters and two sons all of whom survive him. Mrs. Peck passed away in August of 1910. The children are Mrs. E.B. Crosseitte, Mrs. J.T. Judge and Mrs. Goetsch of Carroll; Mrs. H. Ojers of DeWitt, Nebraska; Mrs. H. Hesslingh of Grant township; Mrs. J.C. Woblenberg, of Fargo, North Dakota, and Wm. and George of this county. The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon from the home in Grant township and the remains were laid to rest beside those of the wife and mother in the Carroll cemetery. Thus passes another of the sturdy pioneers to his last reward. Genial, kindly and honest he had won the true respect of neighbors and friends and his death is sincerely mourned by the community in which he had made his home so many years.
