He was the oldest son of William and Elenora Rabe. He helped his father plant and harvest the crop by hand labor and later by horse power. When he was 21 he took over an 80 acre homestead two miles west of his father's farm. On July 19, 1909, he was married to Elisa Meyer, the girl who lived across the road. They lived in a two room claim home on the homestead for about five years. George and Margaret were born there Then they moved and enlarged the house to the present site and built up the farm as more land was needed. In 1917 they got their Model T. Ford which was a great event. The family went to make hay on the west 80 and Elisa was to drive home to do the chores with Margaret and Wilma. She had never driven before but Herman showed her how to start out and she drove over the fire breaking and lost control of the car and ended up in the haystack to stop the car. The top fell down and the girls were bumped about and screaming. Elisa never drove the car again. Hard work was the pioneer life but fun at the country barn dances and Fourth of July celebrations at the Henry Albers open air pavilion were highlights. If there wasn't enough room on the floor, they would dance on the ground. Living near their grandparents was remembered by their five children. Margaret remembers Christmas at their grandparents. There was a Christmas tree with a little gift for each child. Grandma made a hankie, knit socks, or a pin or toy. They also had a phonograph with cylinder records which played German songs while everyone sang. In 1939 they bought the house on the Meyer farm just west of them and moved it to the farm. It was a two story house which was remodeled and enlarged to the present house in 1947. In 1947 Elisa was bothered with an ulcered leg and heart trouble and that's when LaVerne Horning and her sisters worked at the Rabe home. Elisa always kept busy with her quilting and handwork in her last years. In 1959 Herman and Elisa celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Herman took over the housework and cared for Elisa until her death March 19, 1969. Herman spent the last five years of his life in the nursing home at Beulah. He passed away June 17, 1980. Herman and Elisa had five children: George, Margaret, Wilma, Clarence and Norman.
