Read More	Norman and LaVerne Rabe Oliver County 1885-1985; Page 889 Norman Henry was born November 7, 1927, to Herman and Elisa Rabe. Lizzie was 42 years old when he was born. His name on the birth certificate was Vernon Henry but the rest of the family did not like the name, so he was baptized Norman Henry. He attended the Christian Day School at Hannover and was confirmed in 1941. He walked or rode to school every day and remembers many a snow storm when they would just let the horse have his way and he always found his way home. He also remembers his daily syrup sandwiches in his lunch pail and the special treat of an apple or orange on a very rare occasion. He entered the U.S. Army on November 9, 1950, and spent some time in Germany which he really enjoyed and hopes to see again someday. He married LaVerne Horning, August 24,1953, in Stanton. LaVerne was born at home north of Stanton with the services of a midwife. She graduated from Stanton High School and attended Dickinson State College. She taught school north of Stanton for one year and then Norman had different plans for her. Norman and LaVerne bought their home place from John Rabe. It was one mile south of the home place. They had a three room house and all four children were born there. They remember taking their baths in the milk house as they did not have running water in the house. The washing machine was also in the milk house as that was easier than carrying the water to the house and heating it there. Six people in one bedroom was really too crowded so in 1963 they built a new house. The old one was sold and is now in Stanton. They have a diversified farm-dairy, beef, hogs, grain, and several chickens. They have a farrow to finish confinement hog operation and their son, Kyle, plans to farm with his father after his graduation from NDSU. As the boys grew older and could help more, land was bought which included the farms of George Perry, Fred Schlendorf, and Albert Dasher. They are members of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hannover where Norman is an elder. He has served as treasurer, trustee, Sunday School treasurer, and he also served on the Hannover School Board. He is presently commander of the American Legion of Center and a member of the Farmer's Home Administration Board. The Rabes were soil conservation winners in 1976 and are honorary FAA. LaVerne loves to work in their yard with her flowers and garden and has won many awards with them. She enjoys crafts in the winter months such as knitting, crocheting, glass etching, china painting, playing cards, and trying to swim in the Center pool. She has just finished two years as LWML president, SW Region Porkettee president, and president of the Oliver County Homemakers Council. She also held the position of treasurer and vice president of the LWML and treasurer and program chairman of the Farmerettes Homemakers Club, of which she has been a member for 31 years. She was a 4-H leader for 10 years and is presently serving as a State Porkettee director, as well as secretary of the Center West River Bus Association and secretary of the Center Ambulance Association. She is a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and has served as president, secretary, and chaplin. She has also served as vice president and director of the Farm Bureau. At present, LaVerne enjoys singing with the Hannover Church choir. Norman and LaVerne have four children and two grandchildren. Kenny Vernon is living in Gillette, Wyoming. He has one daughter, Jennifer Marie, who is in the first grade. Sheila Elise (Jones) is living in Phoenix City, Alabama. She has one daughter, Marla Alisha Jones, one year old. Twila Renee is living in Fairfax, Virginia. Kyle Arthur is attending NDSU and planning to farm with us in 1984. The Lord has guided us through these past 30 some years, some being sad and hard, others joyful and good. He has blessed us with a fine, healthy family and two lovely, sweet grandchildren, and we will depend on Him for whatever the future will bring.
