Read More	Herman W. and Rosetta Henke Oliver County 1885-1985, Pages 711-713 Herman W. was born on December 18, 1885. to Dietrich and Dorothea (Bargman) Henke on a farm north of Hannover. He was known to be the first white boy born in the Hannover vicinity. He attended a school which was located about a quarter mile from home. Going and coming to the school was done on foot. Water was carried to school and their lunches were frozen many times during the cold winter days. When his father died in 1912. Herman. with the help of his brother, managed the farm. On August 25, 1918, he was married to Rosetta Kern. They lived on a farm one mile north and one mile east of the present site of Hannover. Rose was the second child of Rev. Valentine Kern, who was pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran Church at Hannover at that time. Around the year 1929, the farm home was remodeled to accommodate their growing family. The carpenters lived out at the farm while working on the farm home. Around Christmas, the carpenters finished, and Herman took them back to New Salem with a sled and horses, which was 21 miles one way. During the depression of the 30's, water from one-quarter of a mile away was hauled in barrels to water hogs, chickens, horses, and calves. Cows were kept on a vacant farm 3 1/2 miles away, where they were milked. On August 3, 1942, Rose passed away, leaving eight children, and her husband at home. The children are: Dorothy - Mrs. William F. Hintz; Hilda - Mrs. Forrest Jensen; Ruben - who passed away October 22, 1960; Ervin - who lives on the home place; Wilbert - who was stationed in Alaska and Texas during his tour of duty in the armed services, and presently works on a ranch near Billings, Montana; Adeline - Mrs. Louis Wilkens; Mildred - Mrs. Duane Bueligen; and Herbert - who lives on his Grandfather Henke's farm just north of Hannover. All are members of St. Peter's Lutheran Church at Hannover, where they were baptized and confirmed, except Wilbert, who is a member in Billings, Montana. Herman served as an officer in various capacities in church and the community. He passed away on January 3, 1970, and was laid to rest beside his wife in the Hannover Cemetery.
