Description	:	Mary W. Henke Oliver County 1885-1985, Pages 717-718 Mary, the daughter of Dietrich and Dorothea Henke, was born at Hannover on October 21, 1887. She was baptized by a traveling missionary, E.B. Meischner, and confirmed by F. Matthias on March 23, 1902 at St Peter's. Mary was educated in a little country school located about 1/4 mile from her home. She also attended Bible School and German confirmation school. She was baptized by a traveling missionary, E.B. Meischner, and confirmed by F. Matthias on March 23, 1902 at St Peter's. Mary was educated in a little country school located about 1/4 mile from her home. She also attended Bible School and German confirmation school. Her home, because it was located so near the school, was the boarding place of the public school teachers. Mary loved the outdoors, she helped in the fields with the seeding and the harvesting. She rode and drove the horses as well as her brothers did. She often milked the cows and cared for the poultry. In the winter months, she busied herself with sewing, needlework, crocheting, knitting, quilting, and reading. Whenever there was a need for help, Mary was most willing. She helped many mothers in the Hannover area after their babies were born. During threshing, many times she almost followed the crew, cooking and baking. In 1934 when her youngest brother married, she and her mother built a home about 20 rods from the original farmstead. This new home was enjoyed by them and many others. Many family members and friends' children stayed with Mary while they were attending confirmation school at Hannover. Mary's and Grandma Henke's garden was always large and always shared, as was her chokecherry and bullberry jelly. Her many specialties are missed, but fondly remembered. After her mother's death in 1938, until Mary herself became ill in 1956, she lived in her little house. After her illness, she lived with her sister, Mrs. Philip Maier, in new Salem. She was called to her heavenly home on April 12, 1958. Mary was a faithful member and worker of St. Peter's church and L.W.M.L.
