Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 24, at the Walter ~ Schroeder Funeral Home at Fifth & Story Streets in Boone from 1:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., with the family present to receive friends from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Visitation will continue at the church on Monday from 9:00 A.M. until the service time. Herschel R. Tietjen was born on July 29, 1920 in Boone County, Iowa, the son of Oscar and Anna (Siemsen) Tietjen. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in rural Boone County. He attended St. Paul's Parochial school and graduated from Stanhope High School in 1938. Herschel was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Harrison Township, northeast Boone County, Iowa. He served different positions in St. Paul's Church. Through the years, he farmed with his dad and Uncle John Tietjen. On June 1, 1941, Herschel was married to Dorothy Michel at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. In 1945 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and received an honorable medical discharge. He later worked at the Boone Post Office for 18 years. He and his wife volunteered for many projects. Herschel enjoyed reading, especially the Bible, and watched many major league baseball games with his wife, Dorothy. He was also an avid ball player. He was preceded in death by his parents. Herschel is survived by his wife Dorothy of 70 years; his son, Duane Tietjen and wife Janet of Hurst, Texas; his daughter, Connie Pollman and husband Gene of Medford, Oregon; his three grandsons, Darin Tietjen and wife Lisa of Hurst, Texas, Paul Tietjen and wife Danielle of Minneapolis and Stephen Tietjen and wife Andrea of North Richland Hills, Texas; his one granddaughter, Sara Farrington and husband Damon of Kirkland, Washington; 10 great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Lauren and Katelyn Tietjen of Texas, and Noah, Caleb and Eleanor Tietjen of Minneapolis, Hailey, Cade and Chance Farrington of Kirkland, Washington; and Owen Tietjen of North Richland Hills, Texas his sister, Inez Foye of Rolling Hills, California and many nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends. Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, In Memory of Herschel R. Tietjen. Walter ~ Schroeder Funeral Home at Fifth & Story Streets in Boone is in charge of arrangements.
