She was born Dec. 30, 1922, in Turtle Lake, North Dakota, to Ferdinand Klain and Marie (Seidler) Klain. She was the oldest of eight children. In 1945, she graduated from the Trinity Hospital School of Nursing, and accepted employment at Kenmare Deaconess Hospital. While working at the hospital she met Anton Thiel, who was recovering from surgery. They were married on Feb. 25, 1946, and he always said he proposed after receiving such excellent care. She retired from the hospital in February 1985 after 32 years of dedicated service. She then volunteered to give pedicures at the Baptist Home in Kenmare and the Kenmare Senior Center for several more years, and also did their sewing and mending. She always kept active and made hundreds of rag rugs on her grandmother's loom, quilted every week at the Lutheran church, and knitted more than 30 Christmas stockings for various friends' grandchildren. She was also active in the VFW Auxiliary, Village Neighbors Homemakers, St. Agnes Catholic Church in Kenmare and several other community organizations. Because she was the oldest child and followed by three other sisters before any boys were born she had to help on the farm and learned hard work early. She related memories of helping her father collect thistles with a pitchfork and wagon during the Great Depression to feed the livestock. Like many early farm wives, in addition to holding down a full-time job and helping her husband on the farm, she always put in a garden, canned fruit and vegetables, sewed clothes and always made her own homemade lye soap for laundry, even after moving to town. She is survived by: her son, and his wife, three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, and two brothers. She was preceded in death by her husband, Anton; and a sister, Edith Poore. Even in death she continued to provide medical help by donating her body to science. Disposition by cremation. A private Mass for the family was held on her birthday in Portland, Oregon. A memorial service will be held in Kenmare at a later date in the spring. This Obituary Published in Minot Daily News (January 6, 2010)
