Phare, 89, died March 21, 1994 at WHCC-Gold Leaf, where she had resided for some months. Born May 24, 1904 in Waverly, Hildred was the first of the nine children of George and Carrie (Quakenbush) Jones. In 1913, after surviving being hit by the lightning that demolished the chimney and a corner of their house, Mr. Jones brought his family to Ellensburg where he and Carrie remained for the rest of their lives. Mr. Jones, a carpenter, built a number of the barns and houses in the Kittitas Valley. After high school, Hildred worked both at the Ellensburg Telephone Company and in the local apple orchards, where she met her husband, Walter Phare. Married here on May 8, 1936, she and Walter farmed and truck gardened locally for the rest of their years. From girlhood Hildred was noted for the beauty and skill of her handiwork. She knitted, tatted, braided rugs, crocheted and sewed with a zeal that earned years of prizes at the Kittitas County Fairs. Largely subsisting on their own produce, Hildred canned hundreds of quarts of fruits and vegetables each year. Hildred was preceded in death by her three brothers, Clifton, Kenneth, and John Jones; two of her sisters, and Walter, her beloved husband. Hildred is survived by three sisters, Velma Watson of Ellensburg, Freda Jones of Bellevue, and Beulah Pittman of Hillsboro, Oregon, and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m, Friday, March 25, 1994 at High Valley Cemetery. Reverend Bill Dietz will be officiating. Everyone is asked to meet at the Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Phare requested memorials to the American Heart Association of Washington, 4414 Woodland Park Avenue N., Seattle, WA 98103, Life Support Fund, c/o Ellensburg Fire Department, 102 N.
