Description	:	Came to America in 1889 Henry Ficken, Sr., who had farmed southeast of Seward for many years, passed away at his home at Garland, Nebr., on Monday evening, April 3, after a short illness. Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon at the home and at St. Paul's Lutheran church, Rev. E. Duerschner officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were the grandsons of the deceased. John Henry Ficken was born on Dec. 22, 1861, at Hollenbeck in the Province of Hanover, in Germany. There he also spent his youth. He was married in December 1882 to Anna Marie Loehden, with whom he spent a happy married life of fifty-two years. Of seven children born to them the oldest lies buried in Germany and the others, two sons and four daughters, survive their parents. In 1889 they emigrated to America, coming directly to Seward county, which continued to be their home. Through industry and frugality it was possible for them to acquire their own farm, a mile east of the Brandhorst school, where they resided until about seven years ago when they retired, locating in Garland. In 1934 his faithful wife passed away after which he lived alone, but spending the winter months with his son Herman and family. Many years ago he joined the St. Paul's Lutheran church where he was a regular attendant until two weeks before his death. He served several terms as deacon of the church and was known as a peace-loving conscientious Christian. A number of years ago he began to ail but an operation relieved his condition and he had been in fair health ever since. About a week before his death he contracted a cold which developed into pleurisy and pneumonia and quickly brought to an end a life of 77 years, 3 months and 11 days. His passing is mourned by the following children: Henry Ficken, Jr. and wife, of Milford; Herman and wife; Mrs. Anna Hodde and husband; Mrs. Emma Prochnow and husband, all of Seward; and Mrs. Mary Gruber and husband, of Farnam, Nebr., as well as by 13 grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother in Germany and one brother, John Ficken, of this community, as well as by three sisters, Mrs. Maria Hanseling, Mrs. Catherine Rolfsmeier and Mrs. Margaretha Rolfsmeier, and a large circle of other relatives and friends.
