He was born on February 9, 1936 in Comstock, to Henry Hiram and Harriet Leota (Loew) Kamps. He was the second youngest of nine children, and the only son. He was born on February 9, 1936 in Comstock, to Henry Hiram and Harriet Leota (Loew) Kamps. He was the second youngest of nine children, and the only son. "Hound" is survived by his beloved wife, Judy D. (Casey, 72), of Kalamazoo. He is also survived by four sons: three biological - Keith E. (54) of Albion; Jeffery T. (53) of West Yellowstone, ID, and his partner Kathi Younger; and Kevin J. (43) of Mt. Rainier, MD, and his ex-wife Gabriela Bulisova; and one of the spirit, James T. Snead (44), and his wife Tara, of Parchment. "Cap" is also survived by three sisters: LaLa (Gladys Edgerton, of Allegan), Jean (Barbara Jean Mack, of Schoolcraft), and Pete (Margaret Nelson, of Parchment), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and additional family, including a nephew (Jack Hyram Roach, of Schoolcraft) and great nephew (David Hyram Roach), who carry the name forward. He leaves behind countless friends in his lifelong home of Kalamazoo, and his cold weather refuge in Winter Haven, FL, a location he scouted out, and fell in love with, on annual family vacations. Hiram excelled at football at Kalamazoo Central, from which he graduated in 1954. As a boy, he donated his bicycle to the metal recycling effort in World War II, and later served in the U.S. Army himself in Hanau, Germany and Detroit from 1954 to 1957, winning commendations for marksmanship. He wed Judy Casey on June 6, 1958, a marriage that lasted nearly 55 years, until his death. He faithfully provided for his family, working a dozen years at the paper mill in Parchment, and then for three decades, as a Weemer (Welder/ Maintenance) at Fisher Body in Kalamazoo. He enjoyed fishing since boyhood, culminating with close encounters with Bald Eagles in God's Country at Watersmeet in the U.P. He (well, almost) never gave up on his beloved Tigers. An early sign of his sense of adventure, at age 10, he snuck off by train to Detroit, to catch a game, and nearly got lost, barely making it back that night before his parents found out. Hiram enjoyed the "high life" (in more ways than one), and enjoyed blasting a little Hank Williams Sr. and Johnny Cash from time to time. Rumor has it he played a pretty mean game of shuffleboard in his later years. Hiram will be fondly remembered for his gentle heart, generous spirit, love of life, occasional words of wisdom, and more than a touch of mischief-making. His devotion to family, friends, and neighbors will be sorely missed. Beneficiaries of his compassion included Suzie, Penny, Cookie, Puppy, Wobbly, and Chip Anne, stray dogs he provided a loving, welcome home. Hiram always rooted for the underdog, even from boyhood. As a boy, he once "liberated" watermelons, delivering them to a "hobo" camp on the Kalamazoo River. The men returned the favor by building Hiram and his friends a soap box derby, and serving them Mulligan stew. Hiram's lifelong love of children extended not only to his own sons, but also to numerous nieces, nephews, and beyond. As a high school wood shop student, he voluntarily made toys for needy children at Christmastime. In retirement, Hiram happily fired up his outdoor grill on a regular basis, including to the delight of visually impaired Belarussian children, survivors of the Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe, during their summertime visits to Kalamazoo. In accordance with Hiram's wishes, cremation has taken place and no services will be held. Friends may visit www.joldersma-klein.com to share a condolence message with the family.
