Doak was the youngest son of Samuel & Elizabeth Doak & was born in PA. He moved to Virginia with his parents. Around 1833 he married Elizabeth Joseph, the daughter of a neighbor. They settled on a farm on Haman Ridge in Tyler County, VA where all of their children were born, including 3 who died in infancy. Hiram carried mail from Sisterville to Pennsboro for 12 years. At times, Waitman substituted as mail carrier for his father. When the Civil War was declared, Nathan was the first of Hiram's boys to sign up in August 1861 on the Union side. Then in December Almarine signed up and he was killed in battle in 1863. Perry soon volunteered also. When the war ended, Virginia was split into two states and Tyler county landed in West Virginia. Nathan had been to Kansas in the employ of the government and Hiram decided to settle there. He led (as wagonmaster) a wagon train consisting of his family, friends and neighbors away from the devastation of West Virginia. It was a hard trip as the group was unable to fully stock the wagons before leaving West Virginia. Waitman wrote in a note to an author of a book about the Doak Family: "We came to Kansas in 1866. There weren't many people here at that time, no schools, churches and just a small trading post at Concordia, Kansas. The boys, who were old enough, took homesteads when we first came. It was almost an Indian country here then, but we got along all right through the good times and the bad times of our lives." A grandson of Hiram, Judge Clarence J. Malone of Nebraska, wrote of him, " My grandfather was one of the characters of the early west, a man of strong personality, great will and indomitable courage. He used to discipline not only his children, but also his grandchildren with an iron hand. He was the true ruler of the colony. There was not much law in those early days when he came to Kansas, except what he administered himself." (portion of writings) When Elizabeth Doak died in 1869, Hiram made another trip to West Virginia and brought more old friends and neighbors to Kansas. Amoung that group were Bennetts, Dotsons, and others.
