Description	:	H.J. "Swede" Swedeen Jr., age 83, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Monday, January 17, 2011, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton. Funeral services were 2:00 PM, on Friday, January 21, 2011 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton with Reverend David Lund officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Dalesburg Lutheran Cemetery in rural Vermillion, South Dakota with military honors provided by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791. Honorary pallbearers are Darlow, Elliot, and Rodney Inberg, Darrel Larson, Sfc. Mark Lewis, Gary Richards and John Swedeen. He was born September 9, 1927, Glenwood Township, rural Beresford to Hollie J., Sr. and Emma (Arbeiter) Swedeen. He attended grade schools in Sioux Falls, Sioux City, Marion and Dalesburg rural school while residing with his grandmother, Anna (Lundquist) Swedin in Hub City. He attended Vermillion High School graduating in 1945. He entered the United States Coast Guard – Merchant Marines that year, attending training at the Port of New York, Brooklyn and serving a tour on the M/V James Gillis in the north Atlantic. He was discharged in 1946 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet receiving an honorable discharge in 1948 at rank of Corporal. He was in the Army Reserve from 1953 to 1957 receiving an honorable discharge as a 1st Lieutenant. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree (1953) and Master of Arts degree (1954) at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion and pursued post graduate work for a Doctorate degree at Colorado State College in Greeley, CO. He married Marjorie A. (Larson) Swedeen on July 18, 1952. Marjorie and Hollie moved to Redfield, SD in 1954 where he was Director of Psychological Services and later Director of Admissions and Chief Statistician at the Redfield State Hospital and School until 1974. He served concurrently as Psychologist for the South Dakota State Commission for the Mentally Retarded and Acting Director of Social Services at Redfield State Hospital. He was a consultant for the SD Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and area Psychologist for the Department of Public Instruction performing testing for various public school systems across SD and at the State Training School, State School for the Blind, and State School for the Deaf. In 1974, Hollie and Marjorie moved to Yankton, SD where he was employed as a Staff Psychologist and Psychiatric Social Worker retiring in 1989 after achieving over 35 years of employment with the State of South Dakota. He was a charter and life member of the SD Psychological Association as well as serving on the Executive Committee. He also served as a member of the Governor's Law Committee and the Governor's Conference on Mental Retardation. While practicing psychology, he published research studies including "An Empirical Study of Teacher Attitudes" and "Statistical Facts about Mental Retardation and the Redfield State Hospital & School" and devised testing protocol including the Self Image Test and a Developmental Rating Scale for Severely and Profoundly Mentally Retarded Children and Adults and developed numerous in-service training programs. He was a life time member of the American Legion and VFW and enjoyed fishing, hunting and the many lifelong friendships established across the state of South Dakota. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and enjoyed spending time traveling, studying history…SD, US, Civil War and the Depression Era, maintaining a full repertoire of Ole and Lena jokes and keeping friends, family and the staff and residents of Autumn Winds Assisted Living Center, where he had resided since 2007, laughing. Survivors include three children: Kendall (Judy) Swedeen, Pierre, Jeffrey Swedeen, Yankton, and Marjo (Brian) Rollin, Olathe, KS; six grandchildren: Erik and Kayla Jacobs, Burleson, TX, Ross (Lacy) Swedeen, Rapid City, and Christopher Swedeen, Boise, ID, and Brennen and Maryssa Rollin, Olathe, KS; and one sister, Ginger (Swenson) Lewis, Germantown, TN. Survivors also include brother-in-law and lifetime friend Darrel (Barb) Larson of Vermillion. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marjorie; one son, Randy Swedeen; and two brothers: Douglas Swedeen and Dale Swedeen.
