Smithson, 89, a prominent orchardist and farmer of the Peshastin and Quincy areas, died Wednesday morning, May 21, 1997, in Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane. He was born on Aug. 23, 1907, to William Joseph and Ella Margaret (Treaster) Smithson at Shickley, Neb. In 1910, the family moved to Delavan, Kan., where he received his education, graduating from high school in 1926. In February of 1927, he came to Peshastin, where he worked in the orchards. On May 7, 1927, he married Vada Mae Wilson at Wenatchee. They made their home in the Peshastin area, where he was employed by the Charlie A. Wright Lumber Mill on Peshastin Creek, of which he was later orchard manager. In 1930, Homer and Vada purchased their first orchard on Peshastin Creek, and over the years they acquired additional fruit orchards, which they operated until turning the operation over to their son in 1969. They continued to make their home at the ranch, and they later purchased property near Quincy and developed a natural wildlife preserve and raised cattle, grew alfalfa, sweet corn and other crops. For the past 25 years, they divided their residence between Peshastin and Quincy. Homer was a 67-year member and past president and board director of the Blue Bird Growers in Peshastin; was named Chelan County Conservation District farmer for 1957; member of Ducks Unlimited; Cashmere Sportsman Club; Peshastin United Church of Christ; Upper Grant County Conservation District wildlife farmer of the year in 1996; and was named Wildlife Farmer of the Year in 1996 for the state of Washington. Mr. Smithson is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Al and Molly Smithson of Peshastin; one daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Lynn Ryan of Seaview; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by infant twin sons, five sisters, four brothers and one granddaughter. Arrangements are by Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth.
