Smithson, 88, a prominent orchardist and farmer of the Peshastin and Quincy areas, died Wednesday morning, May 21, 1997, at her Quincy home. She was born Vada Mae Wilson on July 3, 1908, to George and Emma (Wiggins) Wilson at Delevan, Kan., where she grew up and received her early education. Smithson, 88, a prominent orchardist and farmer of the Peshastin and Quincy areas, died Wednesday morning, May 21, 1997, at her Quincy home. She was born Vada Mae Wilson on July 3, 1908, to George and Emma (Wiggins) Wilson at Delevan, Kan., where she grew up and received her early education. In the spring of 1927, she came to Peshastin, and on May 7, 1927, she married Homer A. Smithson at Wenatchee. They made their home in Peshastin, and in 1930, they purchased a fruit orchard on Peshastin Creek. Over the years they acquired additional fruit orchards. Vada worked at local packing warehouses, while raising two children. They later purchased property near Quincy and developed a natural wildlife preserve. They also raised cattle, alfalfa, sweet corn and other crops. They divided their residence between Quincy and Peshastin. Vada took pride in her flower gardens. She loved to cook and immensely enjoyed her beautiful family. She was a member of the Peshastin United Church of Christ and the ABC Club. Together with her husband, they were named Chelan County Conservation District farmers of the year in 1957; Upper Grant County Conservation District wildlife farmers of the year in 1996; and Wildlife Farmers of the Year in 1996 for the state of Washington. Vada is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Al and Molly Smithson of Peshastin; one daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Lynn Ryan of Seaview; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Ferne Kennedy of Long Beach, Calif.; one brother Arlo Wilson of Long Beach, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by twin sons and one granddaughter. Arrangements are by Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth.
