He was born July 3, 1929, in Humboldt, the son of Raymond Homer was the son of Raymond C. and Mary Madelene Hartwig Ostrander. "Gene" Ostrander, 71, Humboldt, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Topeka. He was born July 3, 1929, in Humboldt, the son of Raymond Homer was the son of Raymond C. and Mary Madelene Hartwig Ostrander. He was a 1947 graduate of Humboldt High School and attended Neosho County Community College. He worked at Monarch Cement Co., Humboldt, before serving in the U.S. Army from 1950-53. He worked as a diesel mechanic for Ruan Transportation Co., Humboldt, then at the Chanute company until he retired in 1985. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the V.F.W., and served two years as commander of Cecil J. Meeker V.F.W. Post 170 in Chanute. He married Mildred J. Phillips in Humboldt on Oct. 7, 1950, and she survives. He also is survived by a son, David of Humboldt; a daughter, Debbie Chester of Iola; three brothers, Jack of Texas, Keith of Winchester and Kenny of Salina; seven sisters, Beverly Shelton of Wichita, Donna Nord and Carol Sinclair, both of Iola, Marilyn Carpenter of Grand Rapids, Neb., Janice Anderson of Bella Vista, Fla., Madlyn Adams of Wellsville and Judy Rutledge of Humboldt; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded by a son, Danny, an infant daughter, Diane, and two sisters. A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Friday at Johnson-Kunkel Mortuary, Humboldt, with Father Thomas Scaletty officiating. Inurnment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Humboldt. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, in care of the mortuary.
