Mr. Arland died Saturday in Wyoming Valley Health Care Center in Wilkes-Barre, PA where he had resided since January of this year. Born June 25, 1906, at Garfield to George and Ethel Steward Arland, he attended schools in Garfield and graduated from Garfield High School. He attended Washington State University for one year and married Ann Ripley at Colfax June 1, 1920. She preceded him in death in 1978. As a teenager, Homer began his first of may years working for Standard Oil Company delivering gas. He operated the Standard Oil Company dealership in Palouse for 10 years. In 1948, Homer and his brother Gilbert joined their father George in Palouse at the Arland Motor Co., a dealership for International Machinery. He retired from the company in 1970. He later worked several years at the Linke Implement Company in Oakesdale and worked two summers for the City of Palouse mowing grass and working at the swimming pool. In January of this year he moved from his home in Palouse to Wilkes-Barre to be hear his family. He was a 60 year member of Anchor Lodge at Garfield, and a 50 year member of the El Katif Shrine in Spokane. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Elks Club. He was a former member of the Palouse City Council, a past fire chief for the Palouse Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Presbyterian Church. Survivors include one son, Richard Arland of Wilkes-Barre, PA; one sister, Marion Hemingway of Garfield; and two grandchildren. Memorial gifts may be given to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, North 820 Summit Blvd., Spokane.
